Breath of Vermin — Old Empire
(Conjuration/Summoning)

Level: 3
Range: 0
Components: V, S, M
Duration: Special
Casting Time: 4
Area of Effect: The caster
Saving Throw: None

By means of this ancient magic the caster instantly teleports hundreds upon hundreds of mosquitoes into his current position. They appear in the caster’s mouth and pour forth from his gaping orifice in a single round. They do not choke or otherwise harm or inconvenience the caster in any way, and never attack him.
Once belched forth, the bugs attack and pester everything other than the caster within an area equal to a 30-foot radius for the position of the wizard at the casting of the spell. As such, against living targets, and likewise the undead and other creatures not made of extremely dense substances (like wood and/or harder materials), they cause effective blindness to all they are flying around and/or attacking and cause 1d4 points of damage per level of the caster (to a maximum of 10d4 damage for a 10th-level wizard).
The insects only cause damage upon the first contact with a victim, although they continue to blind and otherwise hinder everyone within their range for a full 3 rounds.
The material component for breath of vermin is a mosquito (or other parasitic flying insect).

Notes: Rare spell. As a FORGOTTEN REALMS Old Empire spell, initial exposure requires a mentor or a read Southern magic spell.
