The Black Art of DeVir

Acidic Blade of Emerald — Drow
(Conjuration)

Level: 8
Range: 10 yds./level
Components: S, M
Casting Time: 8
Duration: 1 rd./level
Area of Effect: Creates 1 ethereal blade
Saving Throw: None

This spell enables the caster to create an emerald green, blade-shaped ethereal rift, about three feet long. It moves about as the caster wills, providing the caster can see and concentrate on it, movement rate of 12. If the caster ceases concentration on the effect at any time, the blade becomes inert and remains motionless unless the caster once again takes control of it, or the spell expires.

The blade can strike twice per round with the THAC0 of a fighter equal to half the level of the caster. An acidic blade easily destroys inanimate objects that do not possess dweomers, melting them into puddles with no saving throw. Otherwise, it forces other magical inanimate objects it comes into contact with to make a successful saving throw vs. disintegration with a +2 bonus to their save (in addition to any other bonuses due to their magical nature) or they melt into useless puddles of goop.

Against creatures, an acidic blade causes 2d10 points of damage per strike. Furthermore, because of its ethereal nature, the blade passes through physical material to the point where it does not even hinder the weapon! Thus a man wearing chain mail (AC 5) attacked by an acidic blade would only have an AC of 10 versus the attack; although if he were wearing magical armor or otherwise possessed magical protection, only the magical bonuses would help stop the blade from successfully striking him.

The material component is a perfectly sculpted emerald, shaped like that of a drow long sword. The sword-shaped emerald must have also previously been rendered ethereal at one time before this spell is cast.

Notes: Restricted to drow; rare spell.
