I have always loved tigers.I'm in awe of the beautiful, powerful creatures.
As a child,I always dreamed of owning a tiger, introducing people to my kitty. : )
As an adult my passion for tigers is still strong. But now my goal is to protect
these magnificent animals. What would the world be like without tigers?
I hope that we never know. Our children would miss out on all the power
and beauty that the animal possesses.
The tiger is the largest of the big cats.It is as strong as it is big.
The tiger's coat is often a bright golden color. It has black stripes on the
BENGAL TIGERS The best known variety of tiger is the Royal Bengal.A full grown male weighs as much
as 500 pounds and may be 10 feet long, including the 3-foot tail.Females are
smaller, about 8 feet in length.Female Bengals weigh about 300 pounds.
Most Bengal tigers live in India. The estimated wild population is 3,060-4,735 tigers.
White tigers are just white-colored Bengal tigers. They are not a seperate
subspecies of tiger.White tigers have blue eyes, a pink nose, and
creamy white fur with chocolate colored stripes.White tigers are only born
when two tigers that both carry the unusual gene for white coloring mate.
Wild white tigers are very rare, and today can only be seen in zoos.
The Siberian tiger is even larger than the Bengal tiger. The Siberian tiger's
orange coloring is paler than all the other tigers. Its stripes are brown
rather than black. It has a white chest and belly, and a thick white ruff of fur
around its neck.In the winter, its coat grows long and shaggy.Male Siberian tigers
grow up to 10'9" and may weigh up to 660 pounds.Females are smaller about 8 1/2
feet from head to tail.Female Siberian tigers weigh about 200 to 370 pounds.
The Siberian tiger lives in eastern Russia. It is estimated that 437-506
Siberian tigers still exist in the wild.
Adult tigers are solitary animals that establish their territories in areas
with enough prey, cover and water to support them. The difficulty of locating
prey in tiger habitat makes it more efficient for tigers to hunt alone.
As a result, they do not tend to form social groups.
Tiger cubs number from 2-5 in a litter.
Tiger cubs are born blind and only weigh 2 to 3 pounds depending on the variety
of tiger. They live on their mother's milk for 6-8 weeks before the female begins
taking them kills to feed. They begin making their own kills at about 18 months of age.
The young remain with their
mother until their third year.
