First ephedrine is NOT speed. Speed (usually methampetamine) is a central
nervous system stimulant that, as you would expect, stimulates the whole
central nervous system. This results in a rather euphoric high that has the
user feeling like they are on top of the world followed by a rather heavy
crash where the user feels like shit.
Ephedrine, on the other hand, is a cardiovascular stimulant similar in effect
to caffeine. It speeds the heart rate and constricts blood vessels. This may
wake you up and perhaps make you feel a bit hyper. However, this "high" is NOT
comparable to the high obtained from speed or other CNS stimulants. This high
is also quite dangerous because increased heart rate and constricted blood
vessels greatly elevate the potential for heart attack and/or stroke even if
you are very young and healthy.
As far as I know, pure ephedrine was recently made illegal (at least in some
states) because it can be rather easily (though not as easy as people in the
government and media would have you believe) converted to real speed. As far
as I know, it is still available OTC in combination cold products, but do NOT
take these for rec. purposes because the other ingredients like tylenol and
most antihistimines can be dangerous and even deadly in high doses. If you
really need to get some of this, you can either stick with other similiar OTC
drugs (i.e. caffeine, phenylpropanolamine, pseudoephedrine) or you can go to a
vitamin and/or herbal store and buy some ma huang or ephedra. This is natural
sources of ephedrine and can be purchased legally.
(editor's note: while you cannot find ephedrine only preperations over-the-counter, you can find ephedrine mixed with guifenasin. These are safe to take recreationally, and are legal. The natural sources, although they contain ephedrine, are usless recreants. Also, it's worth mentioning that ephedrine causes the prostate gland to swell temporarily, and will cause difficulty in urination and ejaculation.)
