NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR SONIC???
Hardly.

I'm sure you've heard the tale a dozen times.  Man has a dream.  Man works hard for dream.  Man goes to school and gets the education to fulfill his dream.  Man works at dozens of shit jobs to pay for the dream.  Man works several volunteer positions to get the experience to pursue his dream.  And then...man gets door slammed in his face over and over again as he tries to attain his dream.

That's been my situation since April, when I graduated from the Radio & Television - Radio program at NAIT.  I've got more than five years of experience thanks to gigs on CLCR, NR92, and 95.3 K-Rock.  Since April, I've sent out job application after job application, and I always get the same reply:  "Fantastic qualifications!  Great demo!  We have no doubt that you're going to have a great career in radio...but your career won't start at our radio station.  Sorry."

And then, not too long ago, there was a beacon...a bright shining hope.  Sonic 102.9, Edmonton's newest and coolest radio station, was looking for a newscaster.  And, they were having a contest to find it!  Open auditions!  I knew that this was the best opportunity that I had come along in ages.  On Saturday, September 24, I went down to the Sonic open auditions at Southgate Mall.  I stood in line for three and a half hours.  They handed me a sample newscast, and trust me, it was a horrible newscast.  I spent the next five minutes frantically rewriting it.  I went up there, did my thing, and my frantic rewrites paid off.  I made it to round 2.

A few days later, I get a call.  I'd made it to round 3.  On Wednesday, October 5, I showed up at the Sonic studios to do the real thing, on the air.

Now, granted, I hadn't been behind a microphone for a few months and I was a little rusty.  But I did the job as best I could.  Everyone agreed that it was one of the best newscasts all week.  That's what they told me on the air.  But, there was one central problem.

I wasn't funny enough.

Turns out that they'd like someone to add punchlines to the silly news stories...someone who'll make a joke about how slutty Paris Hilton is if she just happens to be in the news that day.  "Why couldn't you have been funny as you were in your original audition from Southgate Mall?" they pondered.

From that little statement, I know they know I have the talent to give them what they want.

But, on Friday morning, I got the call from Sonic's PD Al Ford.  "Fantastic qualifications!  Great demo!  We have no doubt that you're going to have a great career in radio...but you didn't win the contest.  However, you still have a chance...."  And that's the chance I'm seizing.  Just like Captain Kirk, I don't believe in the no-win scenario.

It's time to take it to the streets.  It's time to take it to you, the people.

In their newscaster competition, Sonic 102.9 is having their wild card selection.  This is where you, the people, get to vote in your favourite newscaster!  And, as we all know, I was clearly the best of the "also-rans" on the week of October 3 to October 7.  So all we have to do is LET SONIC KNOW!!

How to vote for Mark

The Sonic wild card voting starts on Friday, October 14 at 10AM and goes until Sunday, October 16 at 6PM.  In those 56 hours, all you have to do is go to the Sonic 102.9 Website, and vote for Mark Cappis!  That's it, that's all you have to do!  It's just that easy.

How to get the word out

The way I see it, I can just sit back and rest on my laurels, or I can get out there, pound the pavement, and get as many people as I can to vote for me.  And for that, I need your help.  I'm counting on your support!  What I need you to do is go and e-mail all your friends, get them to go to Sonic's website between Friday, October 14 and Sunday, October 16 and implore them to vote for me!

We can do it!

We have the power!

We can help me achieve my dream of working in radio!

Keep coming back to this website over the next week to get the latest updates on my campaign!
