What is ANIME?
Anime is the art of Japanese Animation. This entire page is dedicated to it. Contrary to popular belief, it is not entirely comprised of children's cartoons. There are various children's shows, such as Dragon Ball, Voltron, and other shows, quite a bit of anime is focused toward an adolescent to adult audience. Just like American movies in live action can be aimed at any audience, the same is true for anime. Anime ranges from the little kiddie shows like Dragon Ball, through more complex mangas and movies like Ghost in the Shell and Neon Genesis Evangelion, to racy movies like Wicked City and Ninja Scroll, to downright hentai (aka pornography).
It is characterized by the large, rounded eyes especially. Rumor has it, this began because American cartoonists always over-accentuated the slant of the Oriental eye. To make fun of the round eyes of the Westerners, they drew large, full eyes on their characters. This may or may not be true, but it in my opinion that is how this particular style of animation got its start.
