From the song Trial By Fire, "Rollin' on, won't be long, I won't leave here till I sing this song."This was the Airplane's last studio album, released in 1972, it, for JA fans, really marked the end of the sixties. There would be another live album to come, Thirty Seconds over Winterland released in 1973 but Long John Silver is their goodbye album, the group split into Hot Tuna and Jefferson Starship. The group went out on a high just as they had come in. 'Long John Silver ring in his ear, he's the hero, make that clear...' is such a forceful song sung by Grace Slick, all about the pirate who had no country or game, 'he knows nobody's got you if you don't sign your name.' This is really Grace Slick's album, you'll hear her on most of the songs, which, by the way, with this particular album, you can link up with CDNow below and hear clips from the first half of the album. I urge you to do that since my words just don't bring justice to this truly JA masterpiece.
I consider their live album, 'Bless Its Pointed Little Head' their best but LJS holds the psychedelic medal of excellence. For this album, it was Grace Slick on piano and vocals, Jack Casady on Bass, Paul Kantner on rhythm guitar and vocals, Jorma Kaukonen on lead guitar and vocals, Papa John Creach and his 'electric' violin, and three different drummers; John (Goatee) Barbata, Joey Covington and Sammy Piazza.
