If you have ever encounteredThe Wind in the Willows, a delicious story by Kenneth Grahame, then you are aware of the pipers. If not, then you should read that book and hear this CD, their first album, released in 1967, nearly two years after the band formed. But, as they formed it appeared that they were indeed "the pipers" who 'hailed the dawn...'
I just want to mention briefly that they worked the local London underground with two interesting singles, Arnold Layne and See Emily Play in the year preceeding the release of Piper.
At the time the group consisted of Syd Barrett on vocals and lead guitar, his roommate Roger Waters, also doing vocals and bass guitar. Rick Wright played keyboards and Nicky Mason was on drums.
