JIMI HENDRIX

Are You Experienced

This debut album first appeared in London in May 1967, less than a month prior to The Monterey International Pop Festival and released simultaneously, coincidentally, with the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. Destined to be one of the best from the group known as, Jimi Hendrix and The Experience, it contains some 'lightening' work. The original album did not include three pre-LP singles that are included in this the re-release and only version available today. The first singles releases were Hey Joe with the 'b' side Stone Free, Purple Haze with 51st Anniversary, and The Wind Cries Mary/Highway Chile. Purple Haze was released, in the US, one day after his riveting performance of it at the Monterey International Pop Festival the evening before. At festival time, Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Are You Experienced were the #1 and #2 album chart toppers, respectively, and 'stood as pillars at the festival'. The festival also served as the debut of Jimi Hendrix and the Experience in the US.

So, with that in mind, there are 17 tracks on this album, which include the six previously mentioned plus Foxy Lady, Manic Depression, Red House, Can You See Me, Love or Confusion, I Don't Live Today, May This Be Love, Fire(which is currently playing on this page), Third Stone From The Sun, Remember, and the title cut Are You Experienced. The group, pictured below, was Jimi Hendrix, bassist Noel Redding and drummer Mitch Mitchell.

Are You Experienced is ranked by New Music Express as the #29th greatest album of all time. More rankings and reviews of this album are at the link below. In my opinion, Jimi Hendrix was the greatest guitarist ever and for all of time. Just one look at any of his performances immortalized on any of the several videos should dispel any doubts. I am personally partial to watching him perform on D. A. Pennebaker's Monterey Pop, The Isle of Wight, Woodstock, and Jimi Hendrix May 1970 at The Berkeley Community Theater. All are VHS and very rewarding sights indeed. They are all readily available with the exception of Monterey Pop, which may require some patience and perseverence to obtain but definately worth the trouble if you know and love these artifacts as I do. Many are available through the link below.

An extremely rare and valuable poster of Jimi in all his acid-drenched 'electric' glory is pictured here on the right. Created by Martin Sharp, it reveals the special power Jimi Hendrix had to fuse the ancient and futuristic 'psychedelia' that resides in the central urges of us all. This is as 'classic' as classic psychedelic rock 'n roll gets.
