FUNKADELIC

FUNKADELIC

Maggot Brain

"Mommy, what's a Funkadelic?" "Someone from Carolina who encountered eternity on LSD and vowed to contain it in a groove." Taken from: "Mommy, What's a Funkadelic?" 1970.

George Clinton is one 'far-out'dude, in 1955, at the age of fourteen, he formed his first band, called it Parliament after the cigarettes he was smoking. Parliament in these early years was regularly going to Boston to take part in Harvard University's test project for LSD. The LSD changed their style from soul and R&B to a psychedelicized "funk". One of the funniest stories about the group is how they managed to have two recording contracts at the same time. Parliament, the cigarette folks, took Parliament, the band, to court over the rights to the name. Just prior to this, they had won a recording contract with Westbound Records. Just alittle bit leary of the name in question, they started recording as the Funkadelics. Well, they won the court battle and signed with Casablanca as Parliament. One band had recording contracts with two labels.

The photo to the right is George Clinton in all his trippy glory, feathers and all... Maggot Brain has seven tracks, all will speak volumes to you. My favorites include: "Can you Get to That", "Hit It and Quit It", "Super Stupid", and "Back in Our Minds". The album was released by WestBound Records in 1971. Clinton has several albums out under both labels. Have fun!...but I'm only linking you to The Funkadelics.
