ANCIENT CULTURES Latin American Musical Ensemble ANCIENT CULTURES is a musical group established in Vancouver in 1987. The five diverse performers of Ancient Cultures have captured the hearts of West Coast audiences with their stunning blend of Andean folk music and European/modern sensibilities, providing a new style of music that is irresistibly engaging yet unpredictable and haunting. The music is strongly based on folkloric roots drawn from the pre-Columbian cultures established in the Andean regions of South America. The music of Latin America varies from country to country as each area has its distinctive instruments. Using over 30 acoustic instruments (including la quena: bamboo flute, zamponas: pan flutes, charango: a small 10 string instrument made out of an armadillo shell, spanish guitars, acoustic drums, vibraphone, and electric bass) ANCIENT CULTURES conveys its exotic and timeless sound evoking a myriad of emotions. In their performances and recordings ANCIENT CULTURES includes arrangements of traditional music as well as their own compositions. They have released three compact discs on GRD/Invincible Records, The Miracle of Christmas in October 1994, El Camino Real in September 1993 (Juno Winner), and Acoustic Mirage in September 1992. Presently, three musicians are from South America and two musicians are from Vancouver, B.C., which allows the group to blend the different influences to create a very unique acoustic experience. |
