DOES ANYONE REALLY BELIVE THAT IS UNDERGROUND?
It's all a bunch of booty!

You guys got a bad ass site! But there is a site called "Hawaii Underground Magazine" that just came out and they are claiming to be the first underground ezine in Hawaii. (I know you guys were up first!) It's all a bunch of booty! They talk about Extreme Radio, I-94, KQMQ, and all that booty music. Aaliyah, Janet Jackson, the Clinton scandal?? is that underground, and what does it have to do with the Hawaii scene? DOES ANYONE REALLY BELIVE THAT IS UNDERGROUND? If you do, you deserve to be led around by the nose like the unsuspecting cattle that you are. Don't belive the hype, don't give them your money. Demand quality! For all of you that keep it real, much respect!

underground—What the hell does that mean anyway?

I am writing an article about Hawaii underground web sites for Hawaii Underground Magazine and surfed on in by recommendation of a friend. (I love your web site by the way). To my surprise I read Dan X's e-mail bashing my web site hawaii-underground.com. W'sup with that? While I completely respect his opinion, I feel he is greatly misinformed about who we are. First of all, our zine is not part of any corporate giant like he tends to believe. This project is fully funded by myself, a poor journalist, who had a dream to show that our generation isn't just a bunch of losers. Many in our generation are struggling students, entertainers, artists, employees, new business owners etc, trying to make something of their lives. This is why we have different sections showing the various talents and skills of the so called Hawaii Generation X.

As far as being the real underground—what the hell does that mean anyway? I know for a fact, that as a writer for many well known newspapers, that despite my suggestions, editors rarely let me cover the success stories of our generation and that's what we are trying to do. As far as bashing our Sept. issue's hip-hop style, it's too bad you didn't wait a week. Our October issue mainly focuses on Alternative bands etc…Our topics will continue to be varied because we know that everyone is different and deserves to be appreciated. As far as this word "first", hey if it offends you, I'll take it off. I could careless. We have been around on the net for three years on different sites and only could afford our own URL now—I have never heard of Quad until recently and do not know how long it has been around. I think they are doing a good job on their focus and applaud them for helping us make the Net interesting for Hawaii. If we really want to get technical, however, my hippie professor father has had his zine out since the web was first available. Many of us were still in grade school then… So Dan, why don't you just chill and help a girl out? Send in your ideas or your opinions to me at kym@iav.com. Help make us better. Lets make love not war. Don't let them divide and conquer us. Lets unite and kick ass. And baby, take up some yoga or get a good lay—release that anger, honey. I know a few good girls down hotel street that'll help ya out.
Peace.

What do you call mainstream? -Juban

youre just scratching the surface of whats really out there,

ok i just read what that danx guy and what the hawaii "underground" lady posted. im sorry but hawaii"underground" magazine is not "underground" god i hate that term, its so played out. its on its way to being in the same category as the word "alternative". but the point is that you cannot possibly call your self "underground" and do a feature on extreme radio. the most blatantly non "underground" thing in the world. i know your intentions and they are good....but i mean i feel like you arent really going out and finding the true "hawaii underground" i mean if you wanted to do a feature on a radio station why not ktuh?(the most under rated station in hawaii!!!) youre just scratching the surface of whats really out there, maybe its better that the true underground isnt getting exposure. it keeps the fake people out. but i dunno if youre gonna claim to be a magazine about the "underground" be a magazine about the "underground" sorry to sound so negative but this is the way i feel. and i know that i sort of sound hypocritical by saying what i said about not exposing the true underground because i do a zine of my own about hawaiis "subcultures" but at least i know what im talking about. well i guess thats it....sorry to sound so damn negative, i give you a lot of respect for doing what youre doing because i know how hard it is to do a publication and a webpage...well i guess thats it. thank you and good night. J A S O N D O R K DONT FORGET ABOUT MUNGEN ONLINE!!! www.lava.net/~jasonekg MUNGEN#5 WILL BE OUT BY THE ZINE FEST(NOVEMBER)!!!

"underground" is getting played out -Juban

this is something I feel strongly about

Hey, I don't know how my email got on here, but I'm not really familiar with the Hawaii Underground that you talk of...I can talk about what underground is to me, however....

Underground hip hop (also associated with independent hip hop) is music made by artists who concentrate more on the technical side of things. Using emceeing, djing, graf, and b-boy elements, these underground heads look at executing each particular element properly. Take the labeled underground emcee Talib Kweli. As an underground emcee, he takes the poetical scheme of rhyming and "plays" with it, creating something new with words and delving deeper into the minds of hip hop fans (which at the same time is very entertaining). So underground emcees are separated because they talk about what nobody wants to hear AND that what they say hasn't been said before. Take a labeled "commercial" emcee like JD and his joint "Money Ain't a Thing". That's not acceptable in the underground because the total aspect of hip hop is lost in the whole song (and video).

Underground hip hop is also defined by the production side of things. The sampling issue has been talked about since Biz Markie and as of late, Puff Daddy, but to hear a beat and call it underground might be easier than listening to an emcee and label him/her/or them underground. Rough House Survivors, for example, came out with "Bad Luck" but got trashed for being unoriginal on their entire album. I don't have a problem with sampling on one condition: if you had to find a particular loop from a record deep in your grandma's basement, then sample it and have everyone in mystery as to how or where you got that beat, then you automatically get labeled as underground (because nobody's gonna play "The Hiatus" in a club, I guarantee you). Yes, I know it's not entirely true for all artists (look at ATCQ) to be labeled underground because of this, but with it comes an emotion, a moment of reocognition when a fellow dj hears a beat and says "oh shit, that's gonna be on my next mixtape".

I guess the main point here is orginality. If you are an expert at emceeing, don't bite Rakim or KRS. If you skratch, don't bite Babu or Revolution, an so on. For some reason, the mainstream isn't looking for anything new or original, they're just looking for what's the shit RIGHT NOW. So all these artists with skills and potential are put to the side because the fans and record execs aren't feelin' them because they're not with the grain and following the latest trend.

That's why it's labeled "Underground". At times it's not what you want to bring home to mother, but with listening and understanding it's what represents true hip hop.

Sorry if it seemed as if my thoughts were scattered, but this is something I feel strongly about, and would like to hear your comments (and be critical, because it helps me out a lot). Peace....

Scream

Scream-Hawaii's premiere electronic dance club, has been rescheduled to twice a month instead of weekly. Scream will return next thursday, September 17th. Be aware that there is no Scream this Thursday, Sept 11th. Scream is still held at the source (808)951-5336) Every Thursday. Scream will be moving back to wednesdays soon. Stay Tuned!

OK Here's a question for you readers.

Its 11:00, where is everyone?

I am writing to you as a dj who frequently plays from 10pm until midnight and want to ask your readers where they are.
Why is it that the "scene" starts at midight? A great many nightclubs struggle here because people aren't showing up until late.
The opening dj at the Kids Klub usually plays to a select few people who show up early AND STAY INSIDE THE CLUB!
(instead of hanging out in the alley bitching that nobody is there yet.) Friday nights at Discotheque (and @1739 last year) never started bumping until midnight Why? The music is pumping and the dancefloor is wide open.

I can understand that it's hard to get your groove on when the dancefloor is empty, but if you came in with some friends,
and started dancing, you could feed off each others energy and the dj could feed off yours. Once the flow starts,
the people coming in are more likely to stay. Im not a upcoming dj, bitter about having to open all the time. Ive been banging away at the scene for a long time, and have played at many clubs at many times. Help the dj's and the club owners out if you want to have places to go.

The scene is all about you, and playing for you is what I look forward to all week!

Keep dancing!

NINJA HOUSE

NONE CHUCKS AND NO STARS FOR THE NINJA HOUSE... I usually like to promote new venues that can add to the spice that is Honolulu's nightlife but how do I describe the Ninja House politely? I can't. The Ninja House is corny. I can't put my finger down on WHY it is but I believe that it may stem from a culmination of things that be corn. First of all, the Ninja House is a host to bands of the karioke generation. In the past there were garage bands and now there are karioke bands. It's like these people use The House to practice because not surprisingly The House is a karioke bar. And when practice is over they move their set right to center stage. So you have a crowd that is really in tune to Hawaii Stars at The House. Next, you have the kinds of people that would call The Ninja House...Ninjahs. You can usually avoid these people if you stay away from the dart boards and pool tables. Yes it adds for potpourri, if you like that kind of thing but don't say you weren't warned.

Hilo

Here is an update on the Spring Break Jam...

I talked to Dave last night, and he said that the event will be held on March 21st Saturday, at the Hilo YWCA... The place where all the previous events(Funk Bashes) have been held. A possible name for the event is "Battle of the Islands." As soon as a flyer for the event comes out, I will have it on my webpage, so look there within the next two weeks or so... The address is:

Oh... And I kinda improved the page a bit... Not much, but some.

1739

THE RES-ERECTION...HARD ON FOR 1739. For those of you who are still in the know and now for those of you who aren't, 1739 IS BACK! Now keep your panties on because there is a catch to this bit of good news. 1739 is at the Wave. Howdaydodat?!! You ask. Well, I answer. Day are the deejays who loves dat ittybitty club soooo much that day are willing to sacrifice it's namesake to a place where the buffalos roam. Izitgonnabegood?!! You're guess is as good as mine, sometimes you gotta take it with a grain of salt and a few margaritas. Then we can talk. Till then darlings, NellieNo

The Last Daze at 1739... for those of you in the know, let's take a moment of silence to witness the loss of 1739 Kalakaua. IT was THE club to end all and in my opinion it even inched out Pink's Garage as the islands best. As my friend King Haze said 'ladies do you prefer to go to the back side or the white side.' 1739 was unique in that way. It fused together all the brothas househeads with their countless number of trinkets into one big happy and sometimes not so happy family. You had your bi-sexual househeads with their stuffed animal backpacks chillin out front with your friendly neighborhood thug with their goldchains. IT was something to exper- ience and it was GOOD. Can anything replace that. I don't think so. Goodbye and goodluck!

by: nellie no
from: everywhere

Don't give up hope, the club is gone, but the scene lives on! By the way, which did you have, trinkets or goldchains?

1739 inched past Pink's Garage as the best club?! R U Crazy?! Who the hell said that? Is this the first time youve ever ben out? Do you even know where the garage was? or maybe you didnt get that information in the STORIES youve heard about it. You must be one of those bisexuall ravers you talk about, fifteen, no maybe your sixteen years old.It sounds like youve only been to after hours because that club was a lot more than just "brotha's" hangin with ravers. When I think about it there wasn't even that much of that going on at all, they hung out near each other, maybe, hardly with each other. Don't get me wrong. I liked 1739 to,I just think you dont know what youre talking about.I bet you think the Fast Zone was a better place for punk shows than the Backdoor.Ha ha ha!I think you should change youre name to Nellie Don't Know Nuthin!!!

P.S. Who put this guys stuff up on the site, you should have thrown it in the trash!

from: HI

You sound like you stopped being a "club kid" a long time ago. I'd say you sound more like a "bitter old club bastard". No matter how "old school" you are there's always somebody older. Don't forget why we started hanging out in the first place. Read the 1739 article and write us again, we'd love to know what you think. Until then, take it easy, please.

1739… 1739…. The club that was all ways on my mind
Sundays made me want to go home
3rd eye had rhythms to make me stone
Some people think it was the best
While others thought it was 2nd best
I don't know what to say
But, at lest we all had a place to play
1739… 1739… The club will all ways be on my mind.

DRUGS

I have a question…aren't drugs still illegal? Lately every time I go out some kid is telling me about how high he is on one drug or another. I'm starting to feel like a damn guidance counselor! I'm not gonna say anything about whether its wrong to do drugs or not, you decide, but I will say its wrong to brag about it…hell its wrong to even talk about it. Mind you, I don't know any of these kids tellin' me how messed up they are. Get a clue! I could be a narc, or a thief, or even just some crazy bastard who likes to murder kids on drugs! Where did these little punks grow up where it's okay to say stupid shit like that. Here's the only warning I'm gonna give- next kid that comes up to me and tells me there on something, I'm sockin' em in the face!

First of all, we like to steer clear of bandwagons. Second, if, and when, we cover that topic, it will be strictly objective, politics, changes in the law, medical facts, stuff like that. As far as those kinds of illegalisubstances, we don't want to write an article for or against it, or the people who choose to use it. But much love just for writing to us!

HIP HOP

I had the chance to catch Mixmaster Mike when he was out here and I gotta say, he was pretty wack! I can't figure out why the promoter would pick the two lamest, poser-ass, fakin-the-funk, stupid clubs to feature him at. They didn't want him to play at Capitol Phat? Or even at 1739? As it turned out, its good that they didn't, he played for about fifteen minutes, and it was tired…why when people got so much skills they get so lazy?

by: A Disappointed Fan

The full effect of Mike is best experienced with the rest of the ISP's. Even if you didn't like the show he put on, you said it yourself, that boy's got skills.

Look I didn't write this letter to be negative, but what's up with Rock Stedy Crew Hawaii? These guys claim there down. But where are they? I think the last time I saw them was a year ago. They should be doing some thing for the Hip-hop scene. Come on… man your Rock Stedy!!! That's a fuck in name. Ahhhhhaa fuck it!

by: Tone-E a.k.a Do something !

We've been missing Rock Steady Hawaii too. Where yall at?

QUAD

I loved the article From Where I'm Standing. It's one of the coolest things I've read in a long time. When are we going to get more? I have a print out of it on my wall. Keep it real, and much love. You don't need to print this.

But we did print it, hope that's okay…A new article is in the works from "Someone you should Know" Thanks for the props!

First let me say this is a wonderful magazine. I left Hawaii, and moved to the Bay area 2 years ago. One of the reasons for my departure was the lack of events for the scene. What scene am I referring to? The Hip-hop, Rave, House urban music scene. Hawaii has so many people NOT working together. Promoters and clubs all trying to take it all for them self. The radio plays only plays the most commercial mainstream top 40 music possible. No magazine to find out what is going on in the scene. The Bay has more then enough to choose from. That's where QUAD magazine can make a difference Take this online magazine to new highs. I want to read the first copy of QUAD magazine printed. There needs to be some source of information for the masses. Maybe if HI had a way of knowing what is going on, the scene would give birth to greater things.

PS: Nice job on covering the scene.

You're right, nightclub politics can kill a scene, we all gotta stay down for the vibe. Thanks for the ego stroke…
