Njord

Njord is the god of...

***Njord was a member of the Vanir. After the war he was sent with his son to Aesir as hostages. Odin made Njord a priest of sacrifices and was believed to be the ruler of growth of seasons and prosperity.


- - ***YNGVI Father of Njord and progenitor of the Yngling Lineage. The Yngling Lineage was the dynasty of Swedish Kings. Yngvi or ing means lord from the olden times. Later on Freyr was the name given that stood for king.

- ***Before you fish you should... It was said that before you go on a fishing adventure, you should pray to Njord. Njord supposedly had no problem bringing good luck or wealth to you as long as you prayed to him for it. - - ***Why was Skadi attracted to Njord?? Skadi’s father died and the god Odin had pity for her. He said that she could marry any god that she wanted to. The way Skadi chose whom she got to marry was by looking at the god’s feet. Skadi had no problem with this and when she chose the feet she wanted to marry, she thought she was choosing Balder, a god known for his looks. She was wrong and married Njord, who must have had the best feet of them all the god’s.
- ***Did the marriage of Njord and Skadi work out? No, Njord being the god of the sea lived by the sea at Noatun harbor. Skadi lived in the icy mountains of Asgard. They would spend six nights at each place and alternate consistently. Eventually she left him.
- ***Who was the mother of Freyr and Frey! We are never told directly but it is said that the mother of Freyr and Frey was Ingun.
- ***THE NJORD SONG -------------- An old man lived by the sea He knew all it’s currens, when the tides would be He loved ocean life and the bounty it brought He gave advice to all sailors, whatever they sought - “You grab your mead, you take your horn… - You raise a boast to the sea-god, Njord You better scuttle you gold both port and starboard Unless you want to be drifting home, clinging to a board Raise up your horn to Njord!” A young man, in the plains he did dwell He’d never seen water outside of a well He came to the seashore and met the old man Who told him how sailors made it to the foreign lands “You grab you mead, you take your horn… You raise a boast to the sea-god, Njord You better scuttle your gold both port and starboard Unless you want to be drifting home, clinging to a board Raise up your horn to Njord!” - The sea has a funny way of being calm and cool all day And everything seems just fine And the sea has a funny way of throwing a storm that sends the ship out of the bay And into the rocks of the salty brine The ship landed on the new land’s shore The crew disembarked, exhausted to the core They turned back around to stare out to sea They raised up their horns that they’d filled with mead Thanks to Njord, were safe ashore… We raise a boast, to the sea-god Njord! He got the gold that we scuttled both port and starboard Now we’re standing here on this foreign shore Protected at sea by Njord!
- ***Aesir and the Vanir... Njord as you know was part of the Vanir. In a battle between the Vanir and Aesir Njord was taken hostage. Njord brought a truce between the two and in Aesir is where Njord resided and where he got married.
- ***From the Vanir to Aesir Coming over as hostages Njord ans his children taught many Vanir beliefs to the Aesir. Njord’s daughter Freya taught the Aesir witchcraft and other Vanir arts while Njord and Frey were appointed to be high priests.
- ***Njord’s son Freyr Was the god of fertility, sun and rain. Member of the Venir, son of Njord and brother to Freyja. Frey was said to be a fierce warrior but a very gentle and forgiving god.
- ***Njord’s daughter Freya Goddess of Love, beauty and sensuality. She is the patroness of sexual encounters and the goddess of child birth and fertility.
