Burning
Permits
Burning
permits must be obtained on the day you plan to use it from one of the three
fire stations.
A report is received from the State Fire Service at approximately
are favorable, permits will be issued after that time. There is no charge for
the permit and you must
be 18 years old to obtain it.
Fires
must be attended by an adult at all times. Vegetation Debris should be kept in
small piles to
burn, kept away from buildings and not be burned in the streets. Water should be
readily available
(garden hose, etc.) at all times. If a complaint is received regarding the
burning you are doing, the
permit will be revoked. Effective
non-vegetation material and bans burning in incinerators within the City of

of Fire Reports
Copies
of fire reports are available from the Chief's office. You should call 854-0654
in advance so a report can be prepared ahead of time. The cost of a report is
$5.00.
Fire
reports before 1997 are filed by date only, therefore you should have at least a
good estimate of when the fire occurred. An address will also be needed.
Tours
are available of our fire stations for groups such as Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts,
Day Cares, etc. Appointments must be made in advance. You should call 854-0654
and ask for the On-duty Captain to schedule an appointment.
Part-Time
Employment as an On-Call Firefighter
We
have five different Companies in the Fire Department. They are Squad 1, Engine
2, Engine 3, Ladder 1 and Rescue.
You
are required to be a Westbrook resident, have a

your application is received, a police background check of driving revocation
and/or suspension and a criminal record check will be conducted. If those are
favorable, your application will be forwarded to the Personnel Committee who
will set up an interview for employment. If accepted for potential employment a
physical will be scheduled by our City Physician. Following the City Physician's
approval, you will be eligible for employment and assigned to one of the four
companies. If you do not have prior firefighting experience you will be required
to complete a 140 hour Firefighter 1 course prior to engaging in active
firefighting.
