Rules of Shot put and Discus

The shot is thrown on all levels by all different types of people. It is normally begun in middle school and the shot weighs 8 pounds. Then comes high school where the shot's weight is moved up to 12 pounds. Then finally comes college, olympic, and professional which all use a 16 pound shot.

The Grip (Shot put) - the shot should be on the ball of the hand fingers slightly open. The thumb can be placed wherever comfortable and help for the grip. Holding the shot on the fingertips is not necessary.

The Grip (Discus) - the disc should be flat on the palm of the hand. The index and middle fingertips should be slightly gripping the dics. Do not worry, the momentum caused during the course of a throw will keep the disc in the hand until relase.

Rules of the Ring - in both throws, the thrower must remain in the ring at all times during the throw. After the throw is complete, he/she must leave the ring through the back. During the course of the throw, the shot or disc must remain in the same position as mentioned in the grip sections above until thrown. Onec thrown, the shot or disc must remain in the vector lines which will be pointed out by the instructor in charge of the ring.
