Riot results in fires, violence

Mysterious Hero Saves Puppies From Fire:
A mysterious student becomes a hero

By Jesse Greenspan, Collegian Staff
May 05, 2003

Aside from the news of the riots and the police brutality that summed up the articles and editorials, one story rises out of the ashes literally, of a boy who sacrificed his own life to save a litter of puppies from a burning building early today.

According to Amherst Fire Department, a resident building in N. Pleasant St caught fire around quarter of 6 in the morning. Apparently, the residents were celebrating a birthday party earlier that night and unsuspectingly, left a candle near a curtain.

Professor Oliver Klosoff, teacher of natural disasters at the science department, was quoted saying that a fire feeds off of oxygen and from that oxygen, it grows bigger. Putting two and two together, the window of which the candle was near was left wide open, allowing oxygen to pour into the room and ignite it's own curtains.

When the sleeping residents finally woke up from the smoke, it was much too late to put out the fire with a simple stomp of the feet. they evacuated the building and immediately called the emergency number, requesting fire trucks to come quickly.

Former UMass student Eric Wasileski was among those in sleeping, and once outside, he realized that his litter of six puppies were still left upstairs in his room. "I didn't know what to do," he said. "The flames were everywhere. I was praying for an angel to come down and save them."

Instead of an angel though, Eric was visited by a myterious badass stranger. The stranger, described as being around 5'11" and fairly good looking, reportedly asked the residents if they were ok, and was told of the puppies.

"He looked at the burning building," said Kristen Mitten, another resident of the building, "and said something like, 'Maybe I can still save my reputation.' With that he ran into the building."

The building at this point was all fire-consumed, and anyone going in there would have to be one bad mother fucker. The stranger entered the building by breaking down the door with his fists, and then entered the fire.

About 15 minutes later, he emerged from the flaming wreckage, just seconds before the whole house collapsed. "He walked over to me, and handed me my puppies. I thanked him, and he said there was no need to. He was just doing it because he needed to. He was such a mysterious hero."

"He was kind of cute too," quoted Kristen."I wish I got his name, if not his number at least."

With that, the AFD came and put out the smoldering fire till all was left was ashes. The hero at that point, disappeared into the early morning.

After having been in the school system for four years, none of the residents have seen anything quite like the event they had that night.
