Solemn

A solemn world envelopes you,
When you realize you are alone.
          Your confidence your accomplice . . .
          Accomplice?
          . . . Assassin?
          A heart.
          A torn, writhing, muscled crimson,
          Ravaged by disregard.
          The butchers block prepared,
          The blood drips unnoticed.
A solemn world envelopes you,
When the knife will not fall.
           Nobody can pierce you.
Barrels of guns aimed far above your heart.
          Above the fissure.
          Above the truth.
No bullet will stray this far.
A solemn world envelopes you,
When the killer cannot kill.
Ripples of a calm tide, lapping at the beach:
          Sole noticed attributes of immensity.
Stones skipped across the glossy finish.
          Callous fists of regret.
          Absorbed by cold, unfeeling swallows.
Turned to sand amidst the canyon’s floor.
A solemn world envelopes you
When your fissures are unexplored.
