i've gathered some pictures and stories of the Afrikaner
nation's pre-1994 airforce to
give you overseas people an idea of how far ahead SA
was:)
most of the pictures are from http://ipmssa.inext.co.za/,
all credits go them :)
you'll find lots of intresting SA military history on
that site.

:)
SAAF technicians at Air Force Base Hoedspruit were not impressed by
the state of the Mozambique Air Force MiG 17 used by Lt Bomba to fly to
South Africa. On landing it was found that the 37 mm Nudelmann-Suranov
NS-2 cannon - the MiG's main armament was jammed The other two 23mm Nudelmann-Rikter
VY cannons were loaded. The tyres of the main undercarriage were worn and
should already been replaced. The most striking visual evidence of the
maintenance standards at the home base of Lt Bomba's MiG Squadron was the
state of the 400 litre drop tanks fitted at half span under each wing.
Both tanks had been used as steps and
had large dents. The tanks would have been condemned and removed in
any air force with high maintenance standards and the ground crew responsible
would have been ordered to stop this practice. That the tanks had not been
removed and the dents had obviously been made over long period made technicians
at AFB Hoedspruit shake their heads in wonder. Although the cockpit was
typical Russian, it was in a surprisingly good condition.
South Africans fixed up the Mig-17 free of charge before they sent
it back by road to communist Mozambique.
We also built and designed one of our own jet fighters
- the Cheetah.

The successful Cheetah programme was an impressive achievement by the South African aviation industry. The programme started out as an upgrade of existing Mirage III aircraft into Cheetah D and E aircraft. It was essentially a black project with many details on the classified list. This was done to great effect, with very few people knowing that a completely new type, the Cheetah C
entered service with the SAAF, after the Cheetah D and E. Initially, all Cheetah aircraft types were regarded as outright failures. But as more detail became available with the very professional air shows during 1995 and the efforts of "Spotty", public opinion changed virtually overnight. The Cheetah C is fitted with high-tech radar, avionics and the latest weapons to make it a formidable opponent to even later fighter aircraft. As the only modern fast jet fighter aircraft in service on Sub-Saharan Africa, the aircraft is unique in a number of aspects and enjoy a huge popularity with aviation enthusiasts worldwide. There are even scale model kits available of both the Cheetah C and Cheetah D!
Like most of the current modern aircraft in service with the SAAF, the Cheetah can trace its origins to the Border War conflict. During the early 80s the SAAF's operational jet aircraft were starting to show their age. Due to the UN's arms embargo against South Africa (the embargo lasted from 1977 until 1994) the existing aircraft were becoming even more difficult to support. The local arms industry was in fact quite capable to support the aircraft then in service. The problem was the immediate future. Increasingly more advanced aircraft(mainly from Soviet origin) were entering service with the frontline states right on the border with South Africa. The Buccaneer and Canberra, although effective strike aircraft, could not serve as practical future fighter aircraft and the SAAF did not have enough on strength. The Mirage F1 was at the time, South Africa's back bone in air defence and also the primary strike aircraft, due to the numbers in service. The Mirage F1 was the last modern aircraft delivered to the SAAF in 1977 and then capable of meeting the immediate threat. But to withdraw them from service for an upgrade would've left a large gap in the air defence and strike capability of South Africa. This was not considered an option.
Due to the arms embargo, the procurement of new fighter aircraft was impossible. This despite the fact that South Africa essentially stood alone against communist aggression. The Mirage III type was even older, (the first examples arrived in 1962), with the airframes subjected to harsh use during operational flying in the Border War area. Following the successful upgrade of Mirage type aircraft by other air forces, in particular the Israeli Kfir and the French Mirage III NG, prompted the SAAF to evaluate this option. It would not be difficult for the local aviation industry to emulate such an programme. Furthermore a large number of SAAF Mirage III aircraft were available for use in an upgrade programme. As the Mirage III type was used as a second line of defence during that time, the SAAF's primary line of defence, in the form of the Mirage F1 would not be affected. However, this meant the F1 would have to fly more missions to compensate for the withdrawn Mirage III aircraft. Often overlooked, but the Mirage III is such a unique design with superb outright performance and with modern improvements in aerodynamics and high tech avionics the aircraft is transformed in a formidable aircraft type. In recent years the high tech avionics are an essential part of modern aircraft and the Cheetah gave the SAAF an aircraft in which such components could be fitted. Much has been written on the link between South Africa and Israel, as no official statement has ever been released by both countries, these could be regarded as mere speculation. It is safe to assume some exchange of technology took place, but all aircraft were converted and build in South Africa by Atlas Aviation. A large component was locally designed and the Cheetah caught a number of people off guard, as many thought such a programme was beyond South Africa's capability. Once again the arms embargo had the opposite effect, with South Africa emerging as a capable arms supplier to take on the world's best.
For more info on Atlas Aircraft Corporation see the Impala Knowledge
Base article. The main initial aim of Atlas was to license built the Aermacchi
MB326 jet trainer and to form a support structure for aircraft in SAAF
service. The assembly and support of Mirage III and Mirage F1 aircraft
gave Atlas considerable experience in all aspects of fast jet aircraft.
South Africa was the largest user of different variants of the Mirage III
which included both single and double seaters. A total number of 58 were
in service with the SAAF which included Mirage III types optimised for
interception, strike, training and reconnaissance duties. (The Mirage III
is currently being researched and will feature in the Knowledge Base, soon).
The only viable option was to upgrade the Mirage III aircraft. As the aircraft
would essentially be a new fighter type capable of meeting modern threats,
key areas were identified that needed substantial upgrades.

Overseas media "cancels" our history out and call us Afrikaners idoits
and racists.
The SAAF is only one of millions of success stories of the Afrikaner,
the international media denies our history because it would insult
the African continent's brain dead idoits.
they dont want everyone to know that the Afrikaner nation was/is the
most productive nation that ever lived on the African continent.
Today these english-speaking black youths think they are smart because
they speak good english and say "Kill the boer"?
well thats another myth , il try to clear that up in good time with
another page like this one :) to that prove Afrikaner youths are demonstratably
smarter than blacks.
And ignorant whites overseas dare say that apartheid SA
was under developed and poor ?
If you ask Oprah Winfrey and Bono, they would say yes, hhahaahahaha,
These photos and stories = total bullshit.
