Honors English 7 Application

Honors English is designed for the student with above average abilities in English. However, ability without motivation does not make a viable candidate for Honors English.

The course content for Honors English encompasses an accelerated study of grammar and usage as well as composition, vocabulary, literature, and speaking skills. Students will be introduced to basic research skills, which they will then use to prepare projects and oral presentations. As part of this accelerated course of study, students will read three books during the summer in addition to nine books during the school term.

For purposes of qualifying for National Honor Society, a grade in Honors English will be averaged as one letter grade higher. For example, a B will be averaged as if it were an A.

The following criteria will be part of the selection process for the Honors Class. Two out of the three are required:
1. Teacher recommendation based upon student’s work ethic, self-discipline, attendance, and cooperation.
2. 88 average in English class
3. SAT Stanine scores of 8 or 9 in reading and language

. In the event that class size must be limited, a committee will rank the students by their SAT scores, GPA in English, and teacher recommendation. Oneonta High School reserves the right to cancel any classes because of low participation or any other reason deemed necessary by the administration

My philosophy of education involves setting high goals and striving for excellence. I have found that students will rise, or sink, to the expectations of their teachers and parents. A child’s attitude toward learning is usually a direct reflection of his parents’ attitudes. In order for students to reach the high goals of Honors English, parental cooperation is a must.

Sincerely,

Judy Sanders
