Chatters Safety Page

I would like to welcome you to this page.

First, I would like to say that this page is set up to help chatters protect themselves. All of these tips are compiled from many senior mods and staff members who have learned them over the years. This page is not set up to insult you, but rather to help you. You may know all this stuff, but please understand that there are some folks who haven't had the opportunity to learn it yet - I never knew most of it till long after I was a mod. I will be giving you an outline of the things we will be covering, so if you already know all of this stuff, no one is gonna be upset if you don't hang around while we go through it.

We will be covering Internet Explorer ,Netscape and Opera browsers.

The stuff we will be going over on this page are:

How to turn off your pics in your browser so you can still view
pics without being vulnerable to a trace code, and
Turning off your Java

TURNING OFF PICS

Let's start off with Internet Explorer :

(1) Open your Internet Explorer browser. In the upper left hand corner
you see a tab entitled "Tools". Click on that, and at the bottom of the
dropdown you'll see "Internet Options". Click on that and a box will
open up.

(2) The tab in the upper right hand corner, "Advanced" is the one we
are lookin' for. Click on that and you will see a whole list of things.
Scroll down till you see a box with "Show Pictures". Uncheck the box,
then hit either the "Ok" /or "Apply", then the "Ok" button at the bottom.
When you open up your browser to a page, you'll see that it doesn't
show you the pics anymore. (I like to have it set up this way when I'm
in a chat room, but I turn the pics back on when I'm surfing.)

Now, when you're in a room and want to view a pic, all you have to
do is right click on the pic and at the bottom of the dropdown you'll
see "Properties".Hit properties and highlight the address of the pic,
then right click on it. on the dropdown, hit copy, close that window.
Open a new window highlight the address in the address window,
hold down your ctrl button, and hit "V", that will put the address of the
pic in the box, now hit enter, and you'll be able to view that pic
without worrying about a trace. (Netscape is much easier to view
pics with, you'll see why later).

Let's move on to Netscape :

(1) Open your browser and in the upper left hand corner you'll see a
tab entitled "Edit". Click on that and at the bottom of the dropdown
you'll see "Preferences". Click on that and a box will open up.

(2) In the white area on the left, at the bottom, you'll see "Advanced". Click on that and at the top of that window you'll see "Automatically Load Images". Uncheck that box. (Also while you're there uncheck the boxes "Enable Java" and "Enable Java Script" - I will explain why when we get to the Java portion) Then hit the "Ok" button at the bottom.

Now, when you're in a room and want to view a pic, all you have to do is right click on the pic and at the bottom of the dropdown you'll see "Copy Image Location". Click on that.

Open another window, highlight the address in the address box, hold down your ctrl key and hit v. This will put the address of the pic in there. Now hit enter and the pic will be shown to you. (You may have to refresh a few times before it will show you the pic)

Let's do the same thing with Opera :

(1) Open up the browser and in the upper left hand corner you'll see a tab entitled "File". Click on that. One link up from the bottom is "Preferences". Click on that and a box will open up.

(2) In the white area on the left, and about half way down the list, you'll see "Multimedia". Click on that and in the next window you'll see a check area entitled "Show No Images". Check the circle next to it. (You'll notice that when you do this the circle entitled "Show All Images" becomes unchecked) Also, I think it's a good idea to uncheck the circle that's entitled "Enable Animation (GIF images)".

Now, when you're in a room, and want to view a pic, all you do is right click on the pic and about half way up the dropdown, you'll see "Copy Image Address". Click on that. Open another window, highlight the address in the address box, hold down your ctrl key and hit v, and this will put the address of the pic in there. Now hit enter and the pic will be shown to you.

TURNING OFF JAVA

Java Script should be turned off while chatting. That way you can't receive bad java scripts.

I have already told you how to turn off your Java in Netscape, so now let's try Internet Explorer. Again in the upper left hand corner of your browser, click on "Tools/Internet Options". Now you'll click on the tab entitled "Security". Click on the icon entitled "Internet" in the white area and in the same window you'll see a button entitled "Custom Level". Click on that and you see another long list of options. Scroll down and check the circles entitled "Disable" under "Active Scripting" and "Scripting of Java Applets", then click on the "Ok" button.

Lets try turning off Java with Opera. In the upper left hand corner, click "File/Preferences". In the white field, you'll see "Plug-ins". Click on that and down at the bottom you need to uncheck the box entitled "Enable Java Script" and also uncheck the box entitled "Enable Java" (if it's available.)

Now after doing Any/All above Reload/Reboot your Brower

A note from Chappy...

"As a chatter I tend to stay away from clicking on any links which are posted in the chatrooms. Some of these links can lead to a cgi script which can pick up your username and password info off your address bar. It's called URL referer information. If you are not sure where a link leads to, right click on the link and go to properties. If you see anything in that address that says CGI then don't go there."

But if you want to look at the link, and not be traced, treat it just as you would a pic in those respective browers.

Well, that's all I have for you right now. I hope it was some help to you.

If you have any questions, I'll try to get them answered, or if you have any helpful tips that you think might help out other chatters, please e-mail them to me at marshall_chappy@hotmail.com Thanks so much for your time.
