Paul Ryan Soap City Soap Central Paul Ryan spent the first three years of his life being raised by Raymond and Claudia Colfax. A sweet boy in an unhappy home, Paul had no idea that his life would suddenly be uprooted by the arrival of Barbara Ryan and James Stenbeck. At the age of three, Paul was taken away from his adopted family and placed in the care of his real parents, Barbara and James. Unfortunately the marriage was not a happy one and his parents divorced soon after and Paul was denied access to his father. Frustrated and not understanding why he couldn't see his father, Paul lashed out at his mother's fiancé and blamed him for his parents' breakup. James fueled the fires and convinced Paul that his mother was to blame. When James “died”, Paul continued to idolize his father and resented his mother's hatred of him. Then James miraculously resurfaced. Now a teenager, Paul was determined to get to know his father and refused to tell anyone, except for his best friend, Andy Dixon, that he'd been in contact with him. Paul refused to believe everyone's claims that James was a dangerous man and continued to see him. Paul's eyes were finally opened when he saw his father try to kill John Dixon. Desperate to save the life of his best friend's father, Paul told James he'd go with him anywhere. Not long after, James perished in a fire. Or so everyone thought. During this time, Paul become close to his father's lover, Emily Stewart and despite his mother's strong disapproval, he found a friend and a lover in her. When James turned up alive again, Paul warily agreed to meet with him. Unfortunately, the meeting turned into a police shoot-out with James holding Paul hostage and luckily Paul escaped. Disillusioned, Paul went to see Emily only to find his father trying to kill her! Desperate to save Emily, Paul fatally shot his father. (Or so he though) Disgusted with himself and his father, Paul changed his last name to Ryan and left Oakdale to find himself. Years later, Paul subsequently returned to Oakdale. Paul, a business man, focused on creating his own company, E.A.S. attempting to make it a success. Meanwhile, he was also in a romance involving Sarah Kasnoff. Lucinda Walsh had other ideas about the company, and she sabotaged Paul to the point that he was forced to shut E.A.S. down. Humiliated by this failure, Paul convinced Sarah to move away with him and the couple departed for parts unknown. Tragedy struck when Barbara was caught in an explosion. Blaming himself for not protecting his mother and her company, Paul decided to stay in Oakdale to help her regain what she'd lost. Apparently before the explosion, Paul had been helping his mother run BRO and had traveled all throughout Europe trying to find himself. Almost immediately upon arriving in town, Paul saw a woman he thought was Lily Snyder only to learn that it was her long-lost twin sister, Rose. The pair struck up a friendship with Rose helping him as he tried to keep Craig away from BRO, and as he tried to prove Craig's guilt in the explosion. Craig was ultimately exonerated, but Paul was grateful to Rose for her help. He constantly reassured her that her brassy ways were endearing, not disgraceful, and that they were a part of the reason why he cared so much about her. In him, Rose found a man who could love her for her self, not who she looked like. Unfortunately, Barbara hated her from first sight, and tried everything she could to break them up. Rose turned the tables on Barbara, threatening to spill her dirty plans to Paul unless she left their relationship alone. Barbara complied, at least temporarily. Rose and Paul became lovers. Then one day, Rose's ex-boyfriend, Vince, dropped back into her life. A series of events convinced Paul that Rose still had feelings for Vince and the pair broke up. Not long after, Paul learned the horrible truth: Rose didn't leave him, she'd been kidnapped by his own parents. Disgusted by his mother's bitterness and willingness to let James manipulate her, Paul swore off both his parents and prayed that Rose would be found. After several weeks of imprisonment in a European spa, Rose managed to escape by taking a corpse’s place in a casket being sent out of the spa. Finally brought back home, she was shocked at her aged appearance, but slowly began to get back to a normal life, including accepting Paul’s marriage proposal. Furthermore, so as not to get bogged down by his mother any more, he resigned as CFO of BRO. Restored to normal with Bob Hughes assistance, Rose and Paul had their engagement party. However, Joe never made it. He was essentially kidnapped by Cooley’s son (both of whom were in cahoots w/ Henry). Henry warned Rose about Joe’s precarious situation and convinced her the only way to get Joe back unharmed was to bail Henry out and hand over the diamond’s provenance (the letter from Caroline Carpenter that originally accompanied the diamond). She did so, and accompanied Henry (followed by Paul) to Avanya to recover Joe. After the ordeal in Avanya, Rose wished to spend time with Joe in Italy, and Paul consented putting a halt to their wedding plans. Paul, then, returned to Oakdale. Once Paul discovered that Marshall had previously represented James, he formulated the theory that Marshall was running for DA so when elected he could take drop all charges against James in Oakdale. His pursuit to stop Marshall had him linking up with Bonnie and together with Isaac, Simon and Henry, they bugged Marshall’s hotel suite. In the process Paul caught Marshall and Jessica in the midst of a tawdry affair. Threatening to expose Jessica, he blackmailed her into finding out info on James’s whereabouts. Jessica eventually conceded the election for DA to Marshall. Do to his meddlesome nature, James had Paul framed for murdering Brandy Taylor and Marshall prosecuted. Bonnie never gave up on Paul, and with the help of Isaac she uncovered Marshall’s past and found out that he had a 15-year-old daughter named Neia Bellaguese. Jessica used that and his conscience to get Marshall to admit to falsely prosecuting Paul, and he was exonerated. In the beginning of 2003, Rose returned to Oakdale, and after being out of touch for a long time, Rose and Paul had some serious issues to work out. |
