Well, chances are the local phone company actually sold your number to our company. They do that with listed numbers. I worked for an Ohio newspaper and every month we got new phone number listings from the phone company.
Then the phone company makes thousands of dollars from that company. Then, guess what?
In the front pages of the White Pages, the phone company tells its customers to say, "I'm not interested" and hang up on telephone sales persons!
Yes, they have already made their millions of dollars on those calls by the person picking up the phone.
And National Long Distance Phone companies have been among the most unethical telephone sales companies in the industry!
"Slamming" or signing you up for Long Distance you never ordered was a common practice by Long Distance Carriers
People have repeatedly asked to not be called by them, and were totally ignored until the recent National Do Not Call Act.
The Newspapers and TV stations add to this hyprocracy by doing dirty stories on Telephone sales, making it look why the only time we call is at dinner time and then invade people privacy by our calls. I worked for the Plain Dealer in Cleveland, Ohio and every so often, one of its main writers would attack us and mentioned how he took advantage of a salesperson, resorting to dirty tricks. A copy editor wrote a horrible artical how the New York times called him about subscribing to it. An other writer wrote garbage about us and the consumber writer wrote a fairly good article on how to handle calls if you didn't want them, now that was her job, however she interviewed someone who was hostile instead of both sides of the issue. But here we were working for the paper itself, trying to increase its circulation, only to be stabbed in the back.
If a relative of yours is the victim of a brutal murder, the next morning when you look our your front window and see someone hiding with a mike and camera man behind him or her, chances are zero it won't be a "telephone sales person but it will be your "helpful" television anchor or newsperson!!
