2005 FINALS JUDGES COMMENTS MICHAEL COE - Design Judge (Sets & Props, Costumes, Visual Enhancement)
Northmead High School, most certainly it is how we meet and deal with adversity that defines us and speaks to our character and I think you spoke very well to your characters tonight with that performance. You established a dichotomy right from the outset with a normative and non-normative world using that really nice bent line to suggest the otherness, that alternate reality. And the shapes that you chose were quite disturbing I thought for that sequence of Greed and Gluttony as were the cosi’s disquieting I thought, in both your costume and your movement code so you managed to get that manic intensity into that scene in all aspects of design, as well as your performance. Conversely Sloth had a really soporific languidity to it, descending from that bath and the stairs and then the cowled figures moving in from the side, colouration really helping you keep it very quiet, and as I say very soporific. And the image that you built there had an almost Robert Wilson kind of quality to it, I thought. A really striking and sophisticated assembly of that stage picture. There was absolutely no doubting Lust as an episode all of its own, again great chore and LX. Wonderful costume and well performed. Pride and Envy, suitably and beautifully conveyed to us, as was Wrath, equally well realised. And somehow your final combination neatly allided all of those various colour pallets together so well, not only in colour pallet but in the actual shape physicalisation of the shape in that background that you gave us behind those sumptuous costumes. Northmead those were certainly the most enjoyable sins that I have experienced, thank you, I’ll go and do some penance.
CHRIS ARONSTEN - Production Judge (Concept, Drama, Soundtrack) Thank you Northmead High School. Listen this was one of those productions that was often operating on a professional level of sophistication I thought. The seven deadly sins have been used as source material for a lot of things, but I felt that you really did bring something new and quite exceptional to this material. Your show was elegant and brilliantly executed from the beginning to the end. In terms of your structure I thought you demonstrated such confidence, you never spent too long on any one thing and the effect it was that we were constantly dazzled by your ideas. We never got tired of anything, we barely had time to take it in, but we understood exactly what you were trying to communicate. Somehow the cast managed to outshine the amazing sets, and there was a lot of very good acting work going on there. I thought everyone was very, very dynamic in their roles. I thought everything was very well researched and totally and quickly realised by all the actors. So matched with your soundtrack this truly was exceptional work, congratulations Northmead High School.

2005 HEATS JUDGES COMMENTS MICHAEL - Design Judge (Sets & Props, Costumes, Visual Enhancement)
Northmead, let me just say right from the outset that YOU GUYS ROCK!!! Indeed, talking bout content regardless of the sin, it’s how you cope with it in adversity that defines us, but that was definitive I’ve got to say. You were scintillating. Beautiful opening, those monolithic set pieces I thought realised the scale of this venue and your set changes literally danced before us so your crew are equally gifted. I gotta say, the reveal of those evil girls was just electric, coming out from under the cloth and in from out of all, kind of every aperture of your set. Really sophisticated colouration and you worked it into your set & levels like seasoned troopers. Your next sequence eclipsed the last and you kept building from that moment on. The bath and the decent by the showgirl from that height into those blue cald monk like figures was just mesmerising. Really held the gaze, incredibly. But the distorted environment of your next sequence of lust with those fractured and fragmented, distorted windows was equally powerful. Envy, I was yes, envious, very envious watching the performance talent out there. It was a completely integrated colour pallet all the way through, working with materials in sheen and texture and saturated colour. The quality of your line work in your scenery was exceptional. You lighting choices awesome. You probably packed more into 8 minutes than most sinners do in a lifetime. Northmead that was a definitive performance of the rock eisteddfod genre. If I had a hat I would take it off to you.
CHRIS - Production Judge (Concept, Drama, Soundtrack) Well Northmead High School, you certainly set out to tackle a lot and I think you tackled even more than you set out to tackle, which is pretty amazing. You took a topic that has been tackled many times before but you somehow managed to bring something totally original to it. It was just a relentless flow of great sound and vision mixed together. It was kinda like ‘Thriller’ meets ‘Rocky Horror’ and something else I haven’t even seen before. It had a really epic feel, that’s hard to do and a hard edge to it which was also very good. Dripping with decadence and, dare I say, sexiness. Love the attitude of it all. I think we identified the narrative device of the girl with the teddy bear was great. I think we felt as overwhelmed and kind of frightened as she did through the whole thing. So well thought out. Every scene had its own story which added to the overall story. And the detail in the performances, you must have worked really hard at those characters because you all gave tiny little things away, you looked at somebody, just the way you walked, all those things really do pay off, I guarantee you. So absolutely, full marks, fantastic, fantastic show.
PAUL - Performance Judge (Choreography, Performance Skill, Stage Use)
Oh hello, it’s Paul. I’ll talk about the choreography. Hey Northmead, I couldn’t take my eyes off you, that’s all of you, thank you. Right from the opening the landscape of shapes was really subtle and then it just moved very quickly. The opulence of everything, that opening image, the table coming in, and then the women crawling across the floor, there’s nothing better! They were mean, they were electric, they were dangerous, well done ladies. Fantastic! Very exciting! The blue shrouded performers were fabulous, very mystrious yeah. Uh Mystrious?! Is there such a word?! Mysterious and unsettling. They really set a different tone. The evil queen of temptation, I loved her with her nails and just her focus. You can take a bow or just nod your head or something. Fantastic. Very strong. I think I found that in the whole piece not only as the whole ensemble, and it is an ensemble, very strong and focused and performed very well, but all your solo performers also pulled focus and added to the whole piece. Thank you. The ladies of the Moulin Rouge, well done. You were very hot, that’s all I can say. Very tempting. You integrated the props and use of strong and elegant solo performers was just fantastic. The devil, he is a winner. And he is a very lucky guy don’t you think?! All those devilettes around him. It was evil, evil and delicious. Ok. I enjoyed in this piece the high skill of accomplishment, the technique and the dance. It’s nice to see, you guys were dancing like there was no tomorrow. This is the one and only performance. I would pay to see that. Thank you!

2004 FINALS JUDGES COMMENTS MICHAEL - Design Judge (Sets & Props, Costumes, Visual Enhancement) “Northmead High School, wonderful work as we move into election mode. Those questions of who can lead and unite the country and where the sword will fall are uppermost in my mind. I thought your opening formalising the colour of the seven states through use of your cosi-colour at centre and the map behind you upstage was a highly effective way of localising your performance straight away, so you got us right into your geographic world of the play immediately by that device. And then the way you treated the space in your performance sculpturally was absolutely outstanding and really sophisticated. (audience screams) Yeah! You used the space sculpturally by playing elevation and angle and line, and your set items had a really lovely dimensional quality to them too, so instead of being that 2D flat edge, you gave us lots of depth with that and you’re treatment of the scenic space. Great scenic art and your crew worked overtime on those moves. Really skilful stuff. You changed the space also by a clever use of mass costume colour and you extended that into the vertical plain by carrying those costumes up on levels. You played levels really significantly through the piece and your use of hand props and banners, so you used both the vertical and horizontal and all of the space in the stage space, you used really well. And your set morphed and transformed continually by the simple expedient of re-arranging set pieces that you already had in the space. And although your colour pallet was incredibly broad, you used that to spectacular effect. Northmead, a brilliant, precise and clear way to start the evening. Thank you very much.” JEMMA - Production Judge (Concept, Drama, Soundtrack) “Northmead High School, what an outstanding achievement. Congratulations. The cinematic quality of your work is what’s really stunning here and you almost forget you’re actually watching live performers. There are no wires, there are no tricks. It’s really quite extraordinary. The stage was so full of action but I was still drawn to your really well delineated story. That’s really clever work there. Strong characters, a stunning soundtrack, a riveting piece of theatre overall. And your fight scenes were electric. What a mind blowing way to start the evening. Congratulations Northmead High School.” AMY - Performance Judge (Choreography, Performance Skill, Stage Use) “Wow, that was so fantastic Northmead High School. Thought your performance tonight was absolutely exceptional. Your theme and characters were established right from the beginning and did some really clear story telling throughout. Awesome opening sequence, such effective use of repetition and canons. And also a very committed performance from your two leads and ensemble in this. Fantastic use of levels and incredible staging from left to right. I loved the originality of every combination created, each just as strong as each other. Your set design, absolutely divine and created a stunning backdrop for a moving performance tonight. Thought the integration of movement in soundtrack was perfect. The substance of the steps put together in Britney Spears’ track, so, so exciting with it’s light and shade. Fantastic performance tonight Northmead High. Thank-you. 2004 HEATS At the 2004 Heats we rocked the Hills Song Centre walking away with an amazing 12 awards for: Choreography, Concept, Costumes, Drama, Entertainment Performance Skill, School Community Sets & Props Soundtrack, Stage Use, Visual Enhancement and FRIENDLIEST SCHOOL! 2004 HEATS JUDGES COMMENTS JEMMA - Production Judge (Concept, Drama, Soundtrack)

You know, this is an amazing achievement, Brilliant fight sequences. Stunning tension & drama from all your cast. Your principles were terrific! Superb building of the dramatic tension & releasing it so that it could build up again. That’s great! The moods were created with effortless skill. Great storytelling. I love the filmic quality of this and the split screen effect that you had towards the end, brilliant! Really well done, Northmead High School! Just tremendous!”
AMY - Performance Judge (Choreography, Performance Skill, Stage Use)
“Wow, that was unreal Northmead High School, thank you. It was both powerful & compassionate. The opening scene, absolutely brilliant. Your levels in the choreography were also brilliant and I loved the puppetry device used in that sequence. Fantastic choreography. Precise quick, fierce moves. Your performers, breathtaking! You lead characters & ensemble both to be well commended. You set was divine and really created a stunning backdrop for a moving performance tonight. I adored the variety of choreography in the Britney Spears section. Your choice of colours were perfect & your soundtrack was exceptional. MICHAEL - Design Judge (Sets & Props, Costumes, Visual Enhancement)
“Well, Northmead High School. Thank you for that show of political feuding. Gives me a new perspective on liberal labour infighting. It absolutely, gobsmackingly, brilliant. What a package, the real deal, the whole thing, what a great piece of work. The opening image was great, especially your dimensional qualities that you used with the space. Something that really was a hallmark of you performance! You didn’t settle for two dimensional painterly qualities. You gave us mass & line & colour & sculptural qualities to the space, not only to your set elements that offered us some depth & relief, but the use of the tree or tree pieces that formulate together, and all that movement of the set. Windows, apertures, portals to look through. Utilising big blocks of colour in costumes to effect dynamic changes in the space. Sets were stunning. Every stage picture you created was a winner. Every image that you left burning in our retinas was just fantastic. Use of colouring in costuming to effect that change and how you did some of those onstage changes just beggars the imagination. It absolutely, unbelievable. Northmead High, great performance, you should be very proud, thank you very much!
