MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT

"This grand book, the universe, is written in the language of mathematics"

Galilei, Galileo (1564 -1642)

WHY DO WE HAVE TO STUDY MATHEMATICS?

..........I hate it!!???

YOU MAY NOT REALISE IT WHEN YOU……

· Work out the best value between six cans of coke or a family size bottle

· Decide whether to pay your bills by monthly direct debit or quarterly

· Change the amount of your cooking ingredients when following a recipe

· Decide what time you need to leave your house to get to an appointment on time

· Decide how to arrange the furniture in your home

· Work out how many games your football team needs to win to avoid relegation

· Cross the road

……YOU ARE DOING MATHEMATICS!

Whilst we aim to make Mathematics interesting and demonstrate that it is a course worth

studying in its own right, you will also use aspects of Mathematics in other subjects,

particularly Science, Geography, Food, Graphics, PE, Resistant Materials, Textiles and ICT.

Moreover; most employers regard a qualification in Mathematics at GCSE grade G or above

to be extremely important, those pupils seeking modern apprenticeships may well require

grade D, whilst pupils wishing to continue their education at college or university may well

need to attain at least a C grade.

Our Mathematics teaching at Morley High School tries to encourage;

· A positive attitude towards Mathematics, including confidence, enjoyment and perseverance,

· An appreciation of the place of Mathematics in everyday life,

· The skill to investigate mathematical ideas and to test and prove your own theories.
