Tewksbury boy drowns in N.H. pond - A Tewksbury teenager swimming with friends in a New Hampshire pond on Friday night failed to reach the shore and drowned after friends tried to rescue him. The body of Marc L. Evans, 16, was recovered yesterday morning from Lucas Pond in Northwood, N.H. Evans had completed his sophomore year at Tewksbury High School last week. With two of his friends, Evans, who was wearing jeans, attempted to swim across the pond, about 150 yards. He got tired about 70 yards away from the shore and tried to head back. Then he went under. Cpl. David Crockett of the Northwood Police Department, who coordinated rescue efforts Friday night and the search on yesterday morning, friends on the shore and in the water heard his cries for help. They called 911, and they dove in. "It was closer for the people on the shore to try to reach him," Crockett said. But friends who dove into the water, and friends who swam back to him, couldn't keep him afloat. Marc Evans "They got ahold of him, but, he was in such a hysterical state that they had to let go. They were being pulled under," Crockett said. About 7:30 p.m. Friday night, Northwood police officers, and divers from the New Hampshire Marine Patrol and the Chichester Police Department spent several hours searching for the boy. In the 40-degree water of Lucas Pond that night, a sunken swimmer might have survived for up to 30 minutes. Crockett called off the search in darkness about 9:30 p.m., for the safety of the divers. The search resumed with daylight about 5 a.m. yesterday. Evans's body was pulled from the water just after 10 a.m., about 35 yards from the shore, where the water is about 20 feet deep. His stepfather, Michael Gentz of Chandler Street in Tewksbury, declined comment last night. Evans is survived by his mother, Winifred Evans of Tewksbury; his father, Marc J. Evans of Maine; a sister, Ashley Evans, and brother, Kyle Evans. Marcio Ferreira, Gentz's business partner with whom he co-owns the River Road Cafe on River Road in Tewksbury, said Gentz does not often mix his personal and professional life. They have been working together for three years, Ferriera said. Northwood is about 20 miles east of Concord, N.H. Lucas Pond covers about 52 acres, and is well-known for trout fishing. The pond is about 40 feet deep at its lowest point. Hebrew College maintains a summer camp, Camp Yavneh, on the pond. The camp where Evans was staying was owned by friends, and not affiliated with Camp Yavneh, Crockett said. The Associated Press contributed to this report.
