Lecture - Commemoration and Celebration of the

200 Anniversary of the Haitian Revolution

OTTAWA - On November 28 and 29, Jaku Konbit in collaboration with Comité des Haitiens de l’Outaouais pour la reconstruction d’Haiti (CHORHA) and Ayiti-Racine will present a special ceremony and lecture to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Haitian Revolution.
On November 18th, 1803, Afrikans in Haiti defeated the army of Emperor Nepoleon Bonaparte in battle at the town of Gonaive, winning the revolutionary war and claiming freedom’s prize – with their own hands. This single achievement brought glory to a race virtually everywhere broken and shackled in slavery, and a grateful people knew hope for the first time in 250 fifty years.
To honour the many Haitians who sacrificed their lives to pay the high price of freedom and to celebrate the two hundredth anniversary of this most auspicious occasion, two solemn ceremonies and public lectures will be held in the auditorium of St. Paul’s University, 223 Main Street, Ottawa, Ontario.

Dr. Patrick Bellegarde-Smith, Professor of Africology at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, will deliver two lectures on the topic of “The importance of the Haitian Revolution to the Afrikan World” in English (Nov. 28th) and French (Nov. 29th).Both lectures will be preceded by a ceremony and reception. Admission is $5 and snacks and refreshments will be on sale.
