September 27, 2003: COLORGUARD/WINTER GUARD
2003-2004
Dear Parents/ Guardians,
Thank you for your child’s participation in this year’s colorguard and winterguard season. We are excited and are looking forward to working with your child. Our goal this year is to help your child further their education, as well as setting a positive atmosphere/ environment toward the performing arts industry (colorguard/ winterguard as a whole).
Here’s a brief explanation of what your child will be doing and learning throughout this year:
· Movement: Involving basic dancing and anatomy of the muscles.
· Technique: Which involves learning how to spin, toss, move, and dance with the equipment (flag, saber, & rifle).
· Health & Anatomy: This includes education of the body and how/why it works, actually doing kinesthetic movements, basically learning how to stay in shape & become healthier!!
· Performing: All three subjects contribute to this last aspect which involves learning and putting together an actual show, and performing it throughout competitions during the year.
There will be fundraisers through the duration of the colorguard/ winterguard season.
Individual fundraisers include: beef stick sales, candy sales, cookie dough sales, and other food sales.
Group Activity fundraisers include: JOG-A-THON, a bowl-a-thon, car wash, lumpia sales, & a carnival booth.
Thank you very much for allowing your child’s participation. If there are any questions or concerns, please contact one of the instructors at any time. We are here to support you, just as much as we need your support throughout the season.

Parent Information
The Colorguard Goal:
Colorguard is about putting together a show incorporating dance, movement, and spinning equipment. However, Alvarado has larger goals in mind. We intend, as a staff, to educate the students in health, learning what affects the body from dancing and spinning. We also intend to create a unity among the students building a strong bond between them. We feel that it is important to feel comfortable within a group in order to be successful.
Fundraisers:
As stated before, there will be many fundraisers for the colorguard and winterguard. The fundraisers that are going on now are the beef stick sales, jog-a-thon pledges, and the fortune cookie sales.
For some of the activities we will need parents to support through volunteering. Parents are needed to support the following:
· Lumpia Sales
· Halloween Carnival
· Sewing
· Performance Chaperones
We are asking for corporate donations from any businesses that may find an interest in sponsoring a non-profit organization, like colorguard. Any help will be appreciated regardless the amount.
We are also looking for any donations that can be used to auction or sell during the school’s carnivals.
Things to Acknowledge:
We must be grateful to have such a large program at Alvarado this year. Other schools around the district are not as fortunate as we are. We would like to remind everyone that we need to represent Alvarado in everything that we do. The colorguard has always been a shining example of what Alvarado represents in spirit and pride, so we must carry on this tradition.
Thank you for taking the time to read this, if you have any information for donations, sponsorships, fundraisers, or any questions please contact us at any time.

Practice Changes:
Monday’s practices will be ending at 5:50 PM instead of 6:30 due to CYO basketball.
An after school study hall will be available for any students that need to stay after school before practice begins. This is not a “fun” time, this is a study time. This will only be available on Mondays. Any student that signs up for the after school study hall must provide a snack each and every time they come. There will be no going off campus to get food, it must be provided from home.
