Paul Frederick Dunwell, Jr.

Paul Frederick Dunwell, Jr was a Boatwain's Mate 2nd Class aboard the USS Little in the United States Navy. He manned the #3 Four Inch Aft Gun. Midnight September 5, 1942, the USS Little was spotted by two Japanese Destroyers. The Little squeezed off seven rounds, three of which were from the #3 gun. Before another round was fired the #3 gun received a direct hit. The Little sank on an even keel. Only forty five people came home to tell the story. When the surviving crew of the Little returned home, the press asked to speak to the "Heroes". It is said that the only comment made was, "The "Heroes" are still on the Little."
