Hi, my name is Ryan Smith and I am a junior exhibitor of poultry. I haven't much experience in the poultry show ring, because as soon as I began my first show the exhibits were quarantined for exotic newcastle disease. I joined a club called the Bakersfield Feather Fanciers Club, but instead of discussing poultry topics, they constantly badgered eachother, so my first start in poultry was sort of rattled by that. People raising chickens are seriously concerned about theirselves rather than helping beginners, where as the pigeon club i have joined, people bend over backwards to help you, and they give you free bird too! As a whole pigeons hobbiers have been much for generous rather than the chicken exhibitors. I'd like to give a big thankyou to Jim Herbaugh for all of his help. He is the greatest pigeon flier, not because he wins alot but, he is interested in preserving his sport by helping begginers start.

Right now, I have been focusing on my racing homers, but I am now coming back to old english game bantams. I have raised old english for about 1 1/2 and it never gets tiring as all these birds have their own behaviors.

My Favorite old english I have are the BB red variety. They are beautiful, and their standards for cockerel lines are easy to achieve. That is why they are so popular and occur very commonly in the poultry show ring making competition fierce.

Breeding for color

My favorite way to produce show quality males, are to use heavily shafted females. This makes the coloring on the male brilliant!

Black Breasted Red backed

Blue Reds are also very popular but not as common as the b b red. My advice is that if you own any bb reds, own some blue reds. That way you can cross them to get both blue reds and bb reds. Which will drastically reduce the chances of you needing to inbreed. Inbreeding can produce desirable birds, horrifying birds, or overly agressive birds.

Blue Breasted Red Backed

My favorite way to produce a brilliant blue red is to breed 2 blue reds together. You will get 50% blue reds 25% bb reds and 25% blue red sports. Cross a sport hen to a richly colore bb red and u will produce some extremely nice blue reds!

FOR SALE

My Old english game bantams are $50 for a trio, but word of advice is that dont expect super hens( but they will have good type and color with excess shafting), but you can expect super cockerels.
