A few days before going to see this movie, I actually saw the original for the first time. This is definitely more of an adaptation of the original than a remake, but the same basis is there.
The scariest part about this movie is that not only does no one survive in the end (After seeing the credits, you see the real ending), but no one knows or explains why this started. These zombie-like creatures basically take a bite out of you, and that's how they kill you. When you're dead, you come back and you do the same. But they only feed off of live blood. I guess when there are no more people alive in the strictest sense, then that's when it all finally ends, but that's a long time to wait.
Let me say this though: In the past, commercials have aired for movies and they have said about how scary they were. Darnkess Falls and Jeepers Creepers come to immediate mind. But you know what? Those movies SUCKED. Dawn Of The Dead is the first movie in I don't know how long that has claimed to be a horror movie and actually lived up to the title. Not only did I enjoy the original and the whole concept behind this movie, but I LOVE this version of it. This could quite possibly become my new favorite movie.
