How To Choose That Perfect Hamster
by Mae Bakette
Choosing that perfect hamster does not only mean that you will be looking for your favorite coat color, like say a sable or a black dominant spot, it means that you will want to choose a healthy, happy looking hamster. You will also have to go to a properly maintained pet store. If the animals in the pet store you visit are unhappy/unhealthy(that means say the dogs, cats, lizards, or even the fish) you will have to go to a different one.
- Before bringing home your hamster make sure the cage is properly set up with food and water.
- Call your local pet store in advance(to eliminate the annoying process of driving all around town to find a good one) and see if they separate the males and the females after they are 4 weeks of age. This is simply a necessary precaution to prevent an unwanted litter.
- Check all the hamsters in the cage. Even if all but one are healthy, there is a very high risk that the one you get will soon be ill and die soon after purchasing it.
- To choose a friendly hamster stick your finger inside the cage. If the hamster you are planning on buying nips it, it will be harder to tame. If the hamster simply sits there, then it is feeling comfortable with you. Ask to pick up the hamster. If told no, then go to another store. It is important to be able to pick up the hamster first to predict what kind of tempermant it has.
- After you have completed the above steps, it is now time to bring your hamster home. Carefully put the box containing your hamster into the cage. Slowly tilt it until it lays on its side. Open the flaps. Allow your hamster to exit. There are two ways of doing this.
The first is to let your hamster crawl out on its own.
Or you could slowly tilt the box, easing the hamster out.
Leave the box in the cage to be used as a sleeping area. (Or if you already have a sleeping area, you can remove the box.) Do NOT disturb your hamster until the next day. This is to allow your hamster to get used to its surroundings.

How to Tame Your New Hamster
by Mae Bakette
Congratulations on getting your new hamster. You now have your hamster, its cage and supplies, and now the only thing you need is to build a good relationship with your hamster.
- Wait until the evening when your hamster is awake and energetic.
- Place your hand in the cage. Do NOT place your hand right in front of your hamster. Let the hamster come to you. To speed up this process"(whether the hamster is afraid or just not interested) place a treat on your hand.
- Allow the hamster to walk onto your hands. Do NOT pick him up suddenly or it will startle him and cause him to use self defense. (Which can be quite painful.) When the hamster is in your hand, slowly lower your hand until it is about 6 inches from the floor. This is just in case your hamster falls. Spend around 5 minutes talking to him and stroking her. This will make your hamster more comfortable with you.
Repeat this process about twice more that day, each time increasing the time you two spend together. Do this three times a day, and pretty soon you and your hamster will be good friends. (Try not to make your sessions with each other any longer than 15 minutes.)
