Supplementary Materials

These are other materials I have used inside or outside of class to assist students’ understanding of and communication in English. There are no games or activities per se, though you can make an activity out of almost anything if you think hard enough about it.

A Brief Guide to Pronunciation:

I: Tongue and Palate

II: Stops (p/b)

II: Fricatives (f/v/s/z)

III: Fricatives (sh/th/)

IV: Liquids (r/l)

This guide, available in four consecutive Word Document files, features graphics of the human vocal apparatus that show students and JETs how to position their mouths correctly in order to produce subtly different sounds like /p/, /b/. /f/. /v/, /sh/, /s/, /z/, /th/, /r/, and /l/. They are accompanied by relatively non-technical explanations in English. (I have found these diagrams especially useful in coaching students for English speech contests.)

♪Feelings…

Ever wish you could get your students to answer the question “How are you today?” with anything other than “Fain, sankusu, ando yuu?” Well, here is a list of twenty-four different expressions they can use instead, complete with Japanese equivalents and pictures for explanation… Print it on an A3 sheet of paper, and put it up in every classroom. It’s helped my students’ expressive powers measurably.

DOKODEMO FISH

You know DORAEMON’s DOKODEMO DOOR? Well, this is the DOKODEMO FISH! It’s a magical fish that can go anywhere! Just a sheet to teach prepositions – good for first and second years mainly – with a cute name behind it really.
