Discovery School’s Puzzlemaker |
|
This is a nifty site for automatically
creating tailor-made word puzzles of all kinds for students: word searches,
word scrambles, crosswords, hidden messages, etc. You can input whatever
vocabulary you want to target. The puzzles the site creates are not as
attractive as they might be, but you can paste them into a word-processing
program and create some not-bad looking puzzles in a very short time. I’ve
tried them at two of my schools, and they were a hit at both. Here are
some examples: |

Discovery School’s Clip Art Section |
|
This is the clip art section of
DiscoverySchool.Com, the nice site above. Thousands of decent- sized images
for teachers, organized by category: art, food, games, language arts, letters
and numbers, mathematics, music, science, seasons and holidays, sports,
students, teachers, etc. Can be used for worksheets, games, flashcards, etc. |

More categories of clip art
here than at the above site, here, but fewer and smaller images in each
category, unless you want to pay the fee for full access. |

This is the lesson plans
section of the old Kitakyushu
JET Site, which is now a bit out of date
now. (It appears to have last been updated in 2003.), Apart from the lesson plans, it also still has some good general
information on it, both specifically for |

JHS Activities at FukuokaJET.com |
|
This is the Junior High School
section of the “Lessons” section of the The Fukuoka Jet
Website. At current writing
there are only two downloads available, but they are sure to increase. One of
them is a Communication Activities Packet stuffed with ideas, and the other
is Christmas and Halloween stuff. It might be worth a look. |

This doesn’t exactly have
tonnes of clip art, stuff, but the clips it has are large, and free of
charge. The page is available in both Japanese and English, and the
vocabulary is appropriate to junior high school use and includes Japan-isms
such as “sumo” and “green tea”. |

This site has a bunch of
great-looking stuff, including the flashcards, games, worksheets, worksheet makers,
and so on that are an ALT’s bread
and butter. They have readymade sheets for a lot of the games we tend
to specialize in, such as battleships, bingo, chutes and ladders, and karuta.
Everything appears to be free of charge as well. There are also decent
explanations of the various activities one can perform with each download.
Available in English and Japanese. |

Loads of stuff on this American
U.S.-based site about animals, the calendar, dinosaurs, the alphabet, etc. Some of it
is free, some is members only. |

A good ESL site overall, with
readymade easy crosswords and wordsearches as well as a good number of other
resources – preposition flashcards, alphabet worksheets, phonics activities, etc. |

This site has not only has
readymade crosswords and wordsearches, plus online puzzle, wordsearch and worksheet
makers, but also downloadable programs to allow you to make stuff easily on
your PC without logging in to the internet. There are several tiers of paid
membership, but plenty of stuff is also free. |
