How to Play “ATTACK 25”

1) On the board, you draw a five-by-five grid, as big as you can. Distinguish all the squares by some method. I like to use the alphabet.

2) Split the class into groups. (A small number of groups is better – six at most.) Each group gets twenty-five identical cards; these are somehow distinguishable from all the other groups’ cards. (For example, one group gets twenty-five “pig” cards, a different group gets twenty-five “gorilla” cards, and so on. Colours can also be used.)

3) The groups take turns selecting squares, and you ask each in turn one of the questions you have prepared in advance. (The questions need not be matched up with the letters on the grid, just so long as you have prepared twenty-five of them.) If the team gives the right answer, they get to put one of their cards over the letter they have chosen, and then the next team gets a go. If a team gives a wrong answer, the next team gets to answer that team’s question AND choose an additional one for themselves.

4) If a team manages to sandwich any other team’s cards horizontally or vertically, those cards convert automatically to the sandwiching team’s cards.

For example:

Start of a four-team game:

the board is empty

Mid-game:

cow team, bunny team, panda team, and

mouse team have all answered one

question correctly.

Cow team’s turn:

cow team selects square ‘E’, and answers correctly. Square ‘E’ becomes a cow, and so do Squares C and D.
