An “almighty”
KARAOKE singer can sing songs from a wide range of genres. Thus, an
“almighty” game or activity is one that can quickly be adapted to a wide
range of grades and grammar points. Of course, you can adapt almost any
activity if you have time to think about it, but when your JTE suddenly comes
to you and says, “Hey you, ALT, FUN game, grammar point X, NEXT PERIOD!”,
it’s good to have stuff to pull out of your hat and use right away. The games
and activities below are intended, once you have done made the initial
preparations, to be used at just such times as these. |

This game,
based on a Japanese game show, is simply a method of quizzing students on any
given grammar point. Somewhat resembling the strategy game “Othello”, it is
really just a way to turn any kind of grammar review or question session into
a game. It is getting some of the students not so interested in English
involved in class too, because students answer in groups, and winning depends
nearly as much on strategy as on knowing the appropriate English points. |
