William Tecumseh Sherman

General William Tecumseh Sherman was born in 1820. At that time many people thought he was a mad man, but many other people thought he was one of the beat generals that ever lived. In 1850, he married Thomas Ewing’s daughter, Eleanor Boyle Ewing. Sherman graduated at the West Point Military Academy in New Jersey. He served in the Mexican War and was later stationed at St. Louis and New Orleans. When Louisiana seceded from the Union, Sherman resigned from the army(Jan, 1861). That May, he rejoined the US army as a colonel. While Ulysses Grant was the reigning general of the West, Sherman dominated the East. At this time more people called Sherman a madman at this time because of his March To The Sea, in which he burned everything in his way. He was promoted to lieutenant general and then to general in 1861. He then retired in 1869. During his march to the sea, he coined the phrase, “War is all hell.” When he retired, people were desperate to convince him to become a political candidate. Despite all these attempts, Sherman only responded by saying, “If nominated, I will not accept, if elected, I will not serve.” He later died in 1890.
