Battle Of Gettysburg

The Battle of Gettysburg was from July 1 to 3 of 1863. This was one of the most famous battles of the Civil War because of the comeback that the Union was able to make. On July 1, Confederate soldiers met on the town of Gettysburg from the North and the West. That drove the Union back to Cemetery Hill. Through the night, reinforcements came for both the Union and the Confederates. On July 2, Lee tried to envelop the Union army by first attacking the left side of the Union army, then the right side. On the morning July 3, the Confederates’ infantrymen were driven from their resting place. In the afternoon, after a test of the artillery bombardment, Lee attacked the Union center at Cemetery Ridge. The “Picket’s Charge” method made a hole in the Unions line for a while, but the South was hit with extreme casualties. The Southern Calvary tied to hit the Union’s back, but was repelled. By July 4, Lee had begun to withdraw his army toward the Potomac River. His train of wounded and dead people stretched over 14 miles. Overall, there were about 51,000 casualties
