IT'S MY WEBSITE AND I'LL RANT IF I WANT TO I hate to have to begin the new year like this, but I can no longer ignore this problem I've been having with stupid people and their stupid/uninteresting/poorly thought out fanfics. I started this website with the belief that there were other people out there who had ideas on how their favorite shows might continue, or were at least creative enough to dive into some characters alittle more than the creators ever did. Instead I find that 7 out of 10 fanfics have little if anything to do with the series at all, but are actually some sick-ass pervert's idea of a plot twist. <Nods a Gondor_872> I found it slightly amusing at first, but some of the shit I've been seeing as of late is damn right ridiculous. It is unfortunate to have to start the year off with a rant, but face it people, you had it coming... <Clears throat> I am simply nauseated by the matterial that has found its way into my inbox over the last 12 months, which more than anything it the reason none of it has ever shown up on the site. As I make no secret to being a Gundam fan, I accordlingly have received mostly Gundam fics. Out of 9 fanfics sent to me by writers, 5 of them were pointless yaoi-boy fantasies. Two others were AC fics with very few words and little to no thought put into just what it was the writer was trying to do. The first rule of communications is that your message must have a PURPOSE. I at first didn't care what that purpose was, but simply writing about one all-powerful Gundam destroying a fleet of red shirts with ease <coughAngel0ocough> or playing the wing boys in a homosexual relationship does not peak my interests, and I'm pretty sure I'm not in the minority here. On the other hand, there were two fics I got that were halfway descent, both by the same writer. Alittle spelling and editing would have been good (Something the writer consistently failed to do) but also it would have been nice if I didn't have to listen to the author trying to explain to me that Zakus were old model Leos and that the RX-78 Gundam was the forunner to Wing Zero. I also did not appreciate some of the mis-naming in the fic; the fact that Char is repeatedly referred to as Zechs Marquis or the fact that the titles Duchy of Zeon and Earth Federation are used interchangeably for some reason. I feel like the British guy on American Idol. I mean, did your friends forget to tell you that you have no tallent whatsoever? And then there's the matter of the two Dragonball Z fics I got... It was interesting for the first couple pages, but again there's the yaoi boy complaint. It's a 14 page fic; Vegeta spends 5 of those pages fighting Androids 19 and 20, the other 9 pages getting a blowjob from Bulma. I asked him to cut it down a bit for the sake of reader boredom, he insisted that most people he showed it to liked the fic the way it is and everyone else would too. Enough is enough. Dragonball Z is long enough without blockheads like you piping nonsense into the storylines. The eight million lemon fics I got were an interesting treat, and though I very much liked the idea of people warning me in advance that the best they could do was a scrapheap of pornographic imagery, I found myself in the position time and again holding a fic and saying "If I put this piece of shit on my site, will I be able to look myself in the mirror in the mornings?" Some of them were pretty entertaining, others <coughKishiriacough> actually showed some imagination and creativity, but when I showed the fics to my two partners they found themselves asking much the same question. Their answer was no, so the rules are now changed. I'm no longer interested in Lemons of any kind. Rauchiness is little more than an excuse for lack of ideas, and if you can't think of anything else you probably shouldn't be writing. I'm also distressed at the ammount of stuff I've been getting that sounded good in summary but turned out to be half-assed tinkerings with keyboards, therefore I'm closing the doors to JUST A CRACK. If I don't know you or am at least familiar with something you've done, you don't stand a snowball's chance in hell of getting in. Do not bother me with anymore of this crap, and if I do have any interest in archving your work, you better make DAMN sure it's your final copy and not a rough draft with misspelled words and missing punctuation to form the ever wonderful 1400 word sentence. And one more thing: when I ask you to send me a copy of your fic, I don't mean next year, I don't mean sometime in the next six months, I don't meant whenever you feel like it. If it is finished, send the damn thing to me! Attach it to an E-mail, cut/paste it into the message, send it Via Chatroom, I DON'T CARE! There are 5 people with otherwise good fics, two Macross, two Gundam lemon, the other a promising 3x3 Sazan Eyes who either never sent me a final draft or else never sent me a draft at all! I don't know if you expected me to hunt you down, browse the web and take the text from other sites or publish half-completed chapters or what! As of right now, if I don't get it within a week, you can assume I am no longer intersted. If you somehow forget to send it... tough shit. Life sucks like that. Lastly, this is for all you yaoi-boy maniacs: --NEWSFLASH-- No one character in Gundam Wing is gay, nor have they ever engaged in ANY kind of relationship with ANYONE that might be even remotely sexual in nature. Dou and Hildie come the closest, and even then they're WAY short of the bar. Do not try to convince me otherwise; you'd have a better chance of convincing me that Miles Davis was Chinese. There are plenty of other characters out there who actually ARE gay, namely Fred Lowe from Outlaw Star or Mash from Macross-II. If it is your style to describe such situations in freakishly graphic detail... though I would GREATLY prefer you to send them somewhere else... you could at least have the common descency not to try and change a person's entire character just so they'll fit better into your fantasy. |
