ASIAN YOUTH GANGS IN VANCOUVER CANADA Here are some notes on Asian gangs in Vancouver Canada.

1. The Red Eagles (Hung Hing) largest (up to 100 members)

- mostly from Hong Kong

- known for extortion

2. Lotus Family

founded by David So (Ling Yue Jai, 1976.

Other gangs listed: Jung Ching (Soccer Club), Star Wars, Wild Animals, Ching Tao (Justice Scale) and Yee Tong.

2. By 1982, three main gangs: Red Eagles (Hung Hing), Lotus (led by Park Shing Low), and Viet Ching (Vietnamese, then run by Hy Hang and Allan Law (Law Kin Keung). Gum Gon (Gum Wah) was a smaller gang associated with the Red Eagles.

3. In 1984 there were a series of murders in Chinatown, mostly between Red Eagles and Viet Ching. (See Vancouver Sun, June 28, 1994). This continued into the late 1980's, including murders, stabbings in Metrotown Mall. The Lotus gang is reported to have made at least 8 armed robberies in Chinatown in two months, December 1986 and January 1987. Records of these gang fights can be found in the June 1987 trial of Hy Hang and Khai Chi Truong (Viet Ching) for the February 28, 1987 attack on Red Eagles members Brian To and Kim Tam, at the Akasaka Restaurant.

4. In October 1987, then Attorney General Brian Smith appointed James T. McBride as Special (provincial) Prosecutor, Asian Gang Unit. His most famous case, tried before Justice Hinds, was of William Yeung (Viet Ching), a 16 year old brought up to adult court, for an attempted murder of Tony Hongin front of the Golden Princess Theatre.

5. Other sources are the September 1990 issue of "Vancouver Magazine" featuring an interview with Gum Wah leader Steven Wong. Wong said he was a member of the 14K triad, but author James Dubro doubts that.
