Black Mages are the powerful casters in the game. Unlike Red Mages, they have only damage based attacks and are much more of a distance based heavy offense. Keep in mind that although you CAN be any race and have this job...you don't neccissarily WANT to be certain races with this job. In my opinion the best class for this job is the Taru-taru, followed by the Mithra and Hume, then Elvaan and Galka. I use a Mithra mainly because they have higher hp and agility than taru-taru's, but less mp. So, when i solo i don't need to heal after every battle, and enemy attacks are much more likely to miss a mithra than any other race.
Strategy/mini FAQ:
Black mages are THE damage dealers. When it gets to later levels, 2 blm's are needed to take on the avatars (some of the toughest baddies in the game). Black mages have it rough early on though...like any other class, it can be downright frustrating to level up until level 15. I found that when i got to around level 13 and could start grouping with people in the valkrum dunes that the class became more fun. As i've gotten to higher levels demand and respect for the blm has only grown. Elemental seal is an excellent job ability, and should be used often, as well as choke and shock. These 2 spells reduce the foes ability to resist spells and will take more damage from elemental spells after you have used these. Of course buy all of your primary damage spells (Aero, Fire, Blizzard, etc.)
But keep in mind that you do not need, nor will you even be able to use, all of the spells offered to you. Aspir is nice at lvl 25, since you gain mp, and drain works great if your close to death and need just a bit of hp to live, but quest for these rather than buying them, you'll save TONS of gil.
