The man who would become Zechs Merquise was originally born Milliardo Peacecraft. He was the son of King Peacecraft of the Sank Kingdom and is also the brother of Relena Darlian/Peacecraft. He wore a mask to conceal his identity while in the OZ organizaiton and is sometimes referred to as the "Lightning Count" for his battle prowess. He has given up the right to rule the Sank Kingdom because of too much blood on his hands due to his actions. He regards Heero as a worthy adversary and at one point rebuilds the destroyed Wing Gundam so that they may again battle one day.

Milliardo Peacecraft had abandoned OZ and the name Zechs Merquise. His mobile suit, Tallgeese, had been destroyed, and he had taken the Gundam Epyon, built by his former friend, Treize Khushrenada. Peacecraft then led the civilian colonial military group, White Fang. During the ensuing "Eve War" against the World Nation, White Fang fired the Battleship Libra's giant beam cannon on the Earth. The World Nation surrendered, but White Fang went against Peacecraft's wishes and prepared to fire again. Peacecraft stopped them, at the cost of his own life.

Milliardo Peacecraft turned out to have survived the destruction of his gundam, and joined the World Nation's Preventers under the codename "Wind." He then helped stop the carrying out of the true Operation Meteor by the Barton Foundation, using the new Tallgeese III.
