There isn't a whole lot known about Yamagi since he is not really the focus of this series. We get the feeling that Yamagi is competative and holds Zero as his rival, making it very clear that he does not like coming in second place. He tells Zero that he will not lose to him, but even in his aggressiveness he still remains friendly giving him a thumbs up. He seems to have a short temper too, especially since Roose seems to be glued to his side, but he still jokes around, like when stealing Clay's "quite interesting" line.

We know he is the shortest of the group and does not like people pointing that out, which is something Zero does. It is implied that he does not get along well with his mother when he tells Zero that he had already forgotten 'that broad'.

His reasons for becoming a candidate is basically a sense of duty and revenge for human kind. He is determined to protect the last planet and to destroy all Victim in order to do so. It is not certain what his EX is as we have not seen him use it in the series. He was partnered up with Sure Lacard during his training session but we don't know what the results of it were. He was somewhat jealous when Zero was partnered up with Erts since he wanted a crack at the top candidate himself.

The relationship between him and his partner Tukasa is not really known either. She being the tallest repairer candidate and he being the shortest pilot candidate was not a fun realization for him, from the gloomy look he portrays when they first meet. She seems to be very efficient at what she does and he has no complaints so far, so it seems their relationship is quite neutral.
