Clay is the brains of the group. Curious by nature he is always thinking. He is also a bit of a hacker and is the one who finds out about missing information on the candidates. He also explained to Zero what the 'horizon' of a planet was, since they both come from colonies. He is also quite savy when it comes to the Goddesses and pilots statistics. At one point he tried conducting an experiment on Roose concerning his quick weight loss. Then he tried some dream experiment on Zero, with the help of Kizna and Saki, nearly resulting in a rampaging EX. It wouldn't be too far-fetched to say that, when this boy gets in trouble he is not alone, he is usually accompanied by Zero.
The two first met on the transport ship to GOA where they got a first hand view of the Goddess' in battle. They also met Hiead. From then on Clay sort of stuck by him, no matter how much he is ignored by him or gets in trouble because of him. Since they share a room, he keeps the peace between Hiead and Zero being the voice of reason, but he also gets Zero into trouble by sneaking into the senior candidates training grounds. Clay has a habit of pushing up his glasses with his index finger to keep them from sliding down his face, and it is usually accompanied by a "quite interesting" quote, whenever something catches his attention.
Clay's EX is seen, but it isn't very clear what it does. He is the scardy-cat of the group and a total embarassment to his partner Saki. He sucks in battle, at one point lasting only 5 seconds in simulation. His relationship with his partner is on good terms however, as she seems to be pretty smart herself, and doesn't mind joining in a little gossip. His past is also a mystery, although we know he lived on a colony before he arrived to GOA. He really isn't into the idea of being a Goddess pilot but figured that he might aswell try cause it was the only way he could get close enough to the information he seeks.
