John "Doc" Holliday

Doc HollidayJohn Holliday was a gambler, a gunfighter, a womanizer, and a very heavy drinker. Here's what his own best friend says about his drinking. "It takes Doc a pint of whiskey just to wake up in the morning"-Wyatt Earp

The reason John Holliday is called "Doc" is because of the fact that this gunfighter, drinker, killer, and gambler, is actually a very educated man. John Holliday received a degree in dentistry. He was quite a successful dentist until he developed tuberculosis. Not too many patients like it when their dentist coughs up contagious diseases into their open mouths. His business began to fail. Thus John Holliday-D.D.S. became "Doc" Holliday-gunfighter.

Doc wasn't a very well known figure until Oct. of 1881 when he teamed up with the Earp brothers, and marched through the town of Tombstone Arizona to disarm the Clantons and Mc Claurys. These cowboys were in violation of carrying firearms in city limits, but this didn't concern Doc, for he was well armed himself. They were threatening the town Marshals who just so happened to be his friends, Virgil Earp, Morgan Earp, and his best friend, Wyatt Earp. This 30-second confrontation in front of the C.S. Fly photo studio would go down in history as the "Gunfight at the O.K. Corral".

Doc HollidayDoc spent most of the rest of his life drinking; gambling, killing and ignoring hid doctor’s orders to stay away from the booze, cigars, and his fast life style. He finally went to Glenwood Springs Colorado to try sniffing sulphur to ease his ailment. By this time he was too far gone. He spent the last 57 days of his life in bed, fourteen of which in a delirium. On Nov. 8th 1887 he awoke, and asked for a glass of whiskey. No sooner did he finish his drink than he looked down at his feet and said "This is funny", he then died. Out of all the times Doc had faced death, and the lawless lifestyle he had lead, he figured to die by a lynch mob, a bullet or even a rope. He never figured he'd die peacefully in bed and with his "boots off".
