They are not mine. I'm just playing with them for a bit. Tyr looked at the hedge trimmers in his right hand, then at the rose bush before him. He shook his head. If he was staring at an enemy and was holding a knife in his hands, he'd know what to do. But this was not the enemy, it was a plant. And for today at least, it was Tyr Anasazi, out of Victoria by Barbarossa's job to trim it. All because Dylan thought it would be a good idea if the crew switched jobs for the day. 'It would be good for the morale of the entire crew if we all switched jobs, just for one full shift. Andromeda has gone through quite some time working out the best possible assignments for everyone. Even her hologram is involved in the process,' he'd said during the morning meeting. Harper and Beka had objected along with Tyr, but Rommie, Dylan, and Trance had agreed that it would be a good idea to try. In the end, Beka was persuaded. The new assignments for today's eight hour shift went in the following manner: Tyr would take over in Hydroponics and Med Deck, Harper would take over Fire Control, Trance would handle all Maintenance and Engineering duties, Rommie would be Captain, Dylan would be first officer, and Beka would take over Environmental and Temperature controls along with Command Protocols through a VR simulation. Andromeda pointed out to all of them that Beka would likely not be able to handle much more of her workload than that. Dylan agreed. And so Tyr sat an hour into his shift in Hydroponics in a green gardener's robe and gloves, trying to figure out how he was supposed to trim this plant. "You could start by snipping off the dead and dying leaves." Tyr turned to the source of the voice. It was Beka, but Beka as a hologram, not Beka as the flesh and blood first officer. "I take it you think I know nothing about plants?" 'Beka' smiled. "You know about plants and I'm the permanent AI of this Heritage Class Cruiser." Tyr snipped off several of the leaves. "I thought the small portion of the AI's functions would take up most of your day?" "Andromeda has decided to give me a break while she runs maintenance. I can go peek as the hologram anywhere for the next ten minutes. She said this is how she keeps her holographic self from getting bored." Tyr snipped a rose off the bush by accident. "So, on your break you chose to inspect my gardening skills." "It's the apron, Tyr. On you, it's a turn on." Tyr growled and put the shears down. Picking up the flexi with his lists of tasks before he did inventory on the Med Deck, he said, "You must be bored." "Hardly. I had no idea how much work Rommie does. I should treat her to some down time on our next leave. Besides, right now Rommie and Dylan are fighting because he's not following all of her orders. Harper and Trance are getting along, but he's done with most of your duties for the day, so he's helping out Trance with maintenance." "How could he be done with weapons inventory so soon?" Tyr frowned. "You know Harper. More resourceful than he looks. On the Maru, he used to do weapons inventory all the time. It was part of his duties." Tyr looked at the flexi and saw that the next task was to manually turn on the sprinklers to water the ferns. He found what he hoped was the valve and turned it. Water rushed to his face full force and when he tried to turn the valve off, it broke. Tyr swore. "Ship!!! Turn off the water!!" 'Beka' closed her eyes and looked around for the proper command code. "Beka..." "I'm looking for it, keep your apron on. Ah, there it is." Beka sent what she thought was the command code to turn the water off. Instead the water from the broken sprinkler was now ice cold. "B-B-B-BEKA!!!" "Jesus you are loud. Let me try again." This time the sprinkler shut off with a slight hiss. Tyr stood in the middle of Hydroponics, his clothing soaked. He looked like a very angry wet tiger. It didn't help keep 'Beka' from laughing. "You think it's easy to care for these plants?" Tyr growled. "When I find out where you are on the ship." ----------------------------------------------------------------- Ten minutes later, Beka was running through the corridors on Deck 15 with her VR visor in one hand and Tyr close behind. When Tyr found out where she was, he got the same look in his eyes that he usually reserved for Harper when he pulled one of his pranks. And Beka did not like being on the receiving end of that look. She only hoped that she could reach the Brig where Rommie and Dylan were located in privacy mode before Tyr caught her. As soon as she reached the doors to the Brig, she overrode the command lock and rushed in. "Hey guys, you have got to help me. Tyr is going to." Beka stopped cold at what she saw. Rommie was seated on Dylan's lap, one knee on either side of his thighs on top of one of the bunks in the third cell. Dylan had one hand on the small of her back and the other hand was somewhere up front. They were kissing. Both of them were completely naked. Dylan turned beet red at having been caught. "Uh.." Beka felt Tyr slam into her from behind as he ran into the room, but he slipped an arm around her waist, catching her before she could fall. "Beka. I had this room in privacy mode," Rommie said. She didn't turn around. "I know, but." "My first officer and I are in conference over his. insubordination. We will let you know when we are available." Beka felt Tyr's arms still around her waist as he half-pulled, half-led her out off the Brig. When they were outside, Beka leaned back against Tyr. "Did I just saw what I thought I saw?" "Yes." Tyr seemed to hesitate, but finally his arm left Beka's waist. Beka turned around. Tyr was still soaked, but he no longer looked as angry. He did, however still remind her of a very wet tiger. Beka liked that mental image of Tyr. "I'm really sorry about the sprinkler." "You're not used to the assigned task. None of us are." "Funny how people reacted differently to stress." Tyr tilted his head. "I should change into dry clothes." Tyr turned to walk away. Beka grabbed his arm. "Hey, Tyr? Feel like following in the Captain's footsteps and having a conference?" Tyr responded with a slow smile. "Let's start with lunch first." End --
