Kickline: What is it?

Don't mistake them for cheerleaders. There's a distinct difference: cheerleaders use their voices. Kickliners use everything else.

Kickline is actually a lot of things. Originally a derivative of cheerleading and also known as "drill team" or "dance team," kickline encompasses a number of dance styles including pom, prop, lyrical, jazz, high-kick and hip-hop. The dancers use pom poms, ribbons and other props, and wear brightly colored uniforms for energy and effect. It may look fresh and funky, but these styles actually have their roots in ballet and other more traditional forms of dance.

The two Island Trees Kickline teams perform during halftime at school football and basketball games, participate in the annual Marching Band Festival at Hofstra University, attend UDA Camp and enter into several Long Island competitions each year. Hours and hours of hard practice time as well as a sense of school tradition and a goal of improvement are behind their spirited performances.

Kickline is not only a trend at Island Trees, but it's exploding all over Long Island. Most high schools have at least a varsity team, and the Universal Dance Association's annual competitions get bigger and bigger every year.

This Web site is dedicated to Island Trees' varsity and junior varsity kicklines - who they are, what they're doing, where they're going. Browse the site to learn all about them and check back for updates on the teams' progress!
