before you start: you may want to write down your specific ZA settings (and your license key number, if you're using za pro.) these are usually transferred fine, but if you end up deciding to delete the database files (see later) or run into a glitch, it'll be good to have them. disconnect from the internet. here we go!

* uncheck the box in za that says "load on startup" (and close down deskband if you use it by right-clicking the task bar and unchecking it), and re-boot. neglecting this step is the single most common cause of upgrade problems.

* now that you've rebooted, make sure ZA is not running; more importantly, true vector is not running. to do this in Win9x or ME, use a process viewer to see if there is vsmon.exe, minilog.exe, or zapro.exe. if you have WinNT or Win2K, you can open a command prompt window and type, "net stop vsmon". You should get an error message that the service was not running, or else a message that the service is now stopped.
2a.OPTIONAL: follow the directions here to delete the two database files in the windows\internet logs subdirectory (in NT and 2000 it will be c:\winnt\internet logs). sometimes these become corrupted, causing problems.
2b.OPTIONAL: uninstall za (through the uninstaller, preferable to using add/remove.) if you do either of the two optional steps, REBOOT AGAIN.

* now that you've (optionally uninstalled and) rebooted, install your new version. make sure 'load at startup' is checked now in the new version. set your preferences the way you like them. if you're using pro, you'll want to set up your local zone contents special servers now. as for the regular programs in the programs list, if you have nuked your old databases, it's usually easiest to let each program ask for permission to connect as you use it and give it (or not), checking "don't ask again" for those you want to give permission to permanently. don't forget to be careful setting server permissions.

for most people, following these directions, especially number 1, will assure a problem-free upgrade. if you still have problems, you may need to do a manual uninstall involving the registry; os-specific instructions are here on zone labs.
