"The Perfect Friend"

(This poem was published in the 1999 edition of The Teacher's Selection Anthology of 11th Grade Poetry)

You're always there to listen.
You never tell a soul.
You're always there to cheer me up
and help me reach my goal.
You're always there right by my side
to help me dry my tears.
To comfort me when I feel down,
and always calm my fears.
And guess who's there when I need a hug...
...yes, you're there for that too.
Well, I've made it this far,
couldn't have done it without you.
You're like the perfect teddy-bear.
You've been there to hug and hold.
You've listened to all kinds of things,
but still you haven't told.
Can't be a better friend than you,
though I'll try my best,
to be there through the thick-and-thin
and...well, you know the rest.
