Capricorn

(December 22 - January 20)

The sign of Capricorn within the Astrological zodiac dates back at least some 4,000 years. It is known that the Sumerians placed a great emphasis upon this particular time of the period. During this earlier age, the winter solstice (now in Sagittarius) occurred within Capricorn. On this date, many cultures of the ancient world would perform elaborate rituals and carry out sacrifices.

Among societies of the Mediterranean region, animals were associated with the four seasons. To each of these creatures belonged either a solstice or equinox. It is generally recognized that these figures were the bull, lion, scorpion and a sea creature. This imagery corresponds clearly to the astrological signs of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Capricorn. In a symbolic ritual, kings of the period would combat and subdue these animals to represent dominion over the elements of the seasons.

The association of the goat with Capricorn clearly dates back to ancient Babylon, at least. The Greeks related the sign to the horned god Pan. The image of the hybrid goat-fish creature corresponds to the tale of Pan's encounter with the beast Typhon. Attempting to escape the dreaded monster, Pan turned his lower half into a fish, in order to swiftly swim away. However, here again, the association of Capricorn with water, also dates to earlier cultures. The Egyptians and Chinese recognized in this period the commencement of the much anticipated rainy season. Immediately following Capricorn are Aquarius, the water bearer, pouring moisture upon the earth, and Pisces, the fish, immersed in the unseen life giving forces of water.

There is also a Capricornian reference recognized in the Babylonian god Ea, who wore a cloak designed as a fish's skin, complete with head and tail. One of his many names was "Antelope of the Seas". A good description of a fish tailed goat? He is one of the world's great culture initiates, who rose from the oceans to teach wisdom to land-dwelling man.

Capricorn is the tenth Sign of the Zodiac. After Scorpio and Sagittarius' discovery of other people through emotion and intellect, Capricorn focuses on ascending through life through hard work. People born under this Sign are both ambitious and disciplined; determined and dedicated to achieving their goals. They are also practical and realistic, cautious not to get in over their heads. As the tenth Sign, Capricorn also rules the tenth House: the House of Social Status.

The Astrological Symbol of Capricorn is the Sea Goat. They start from the Sea and ascend to the highest mountain tops, working their way upward with every step. While the path is not always smooth, their determination to succeed ensures they will push on. They can also be rigid and unforgiving when others stand in their way. They are business leaders, often starting businesses or coming up with new ideas. In this way, Capricorn exemplifies the Cardinal Quality assigned to it. They are conservative, rarely risking too much, but their tendency toward conformity make stifle them at times. Their organizational ability combines with their diligence to help them achieve, but they can be narrow-minded and over-critical of people not as ambitious as they are. Within the Zodiac, Capricorn is opposite Cancer, the Sign of Home. Cancer finds status within the family, while Capricorn is about social status. Their business achievement and reputation as solid citizens helps them reach a high position in society, but they may also be moralistic toward others.

Capricorn is ruled by the Planet Saturn. In ancient Roman mythology, Saturn (and his Greek equivalent, Cronus) was the father of many of the Gods, including Zeus. Saturn is about discipline, hard work, and responsibility. It rules both Capricorn and Aquarius; Capricorn is the feminine, or night aspect and Aquarius is the masculine, or day. Both Signs are about achieving goals through hard work, but Aquarius works hard to achieve their visions, while Capricorn uses hard work to gain authority and social status. Appearances are important. As a result, Capricorn is loyal and charitable, self-controlled and self-reliant, but this may also lead to inhibition or fatalism. They are dependable and serious, never giving up on their goals. Other people may see their ambition as domineering or a reflection of egotism, but they are patient and purposeful when working toward what they want.

The Element associated with Capricorn is Earth. Earth Signs are practical: they tend to respond to the world through practicality, rather than physical action, intellect, or emotion. They are the businessmen of the Zodiac, and when Earth is combined with the action-oriented Element of Fire, they become the Capricorns who start businesses and lead companies. Capricorns are economical and scrupulous, but they can also be materialistic and greedy. They tend to be conventional, rather than rebellious or flashy.

Capricorns are among the responsible and traditional Signs. They are generally reserved, careful, and stable. Sometimes they may be overly critical, even bossy, but this is due to their strong desire to achieve their goals and not to a desire to be rude. In fact, Capricorns are generally polite because they understand that making enemies will not help them achieve in life.

In their leisure time, Capricorns enjoy competition with other people. They tend to enjoy team sports, but it can be difficult for them when they lose through no fault of their own. One-on-one competition also appeals to them. In love relationships, Capricorn is devoted, not daring!

The great strength of the Capricorn-born is in their ability to set goals and keep working until they achieve them. Their ambition is inexhaustible, and they are not easily deterred when their goals are in sight. Their hard work makes them one of the most successful characters of the Zodiac.

The Capricorn Woman

Women born to the sign of Capricorn are prone at certain points in their lives to a passive acceptance of the kinkier sides of sexual pleasure. At these times, they may be driven by an almost animal form of lust, which appears to lack depth, soul, and appreciation for their partners.

The true Capricorn woman will give you a com-up-and-see-me-sometime look, and then challenge you to warm her up. However, this is at least partly due to her fear of rejection - in place even before she finds hints of acceptance. In private, she may think about the glorious release of wholehearted indulgence in the loving sex act. In the presence of an obviously virile man, however, she tends to hang back.

Capricorn women seem reluctant, aristocratic, and wordly, but hesitant, about surrender. What would be the outcome, status-wise (she thinks)? What is the likelihood of unwanted pregnancy, should she lower her defenses? What advantage could be gained by letting go and losing? Inside this ice cube, shaped like a most desirable woman, is a burning flame that doesn't give a damn about any of these questions.

But the question, "Will I be hurt?" persists at a level close to the exterior.

The really hot-blooded man must turn up the fire in her stove patiently, with reassurances, and only gradually increased hand motion.

As in the case with the reluctant and inhibited Virgos, some fine, vintage potable will help cut through layers of defense and apparel. No presents, no flowers, and no vodka - no Zsa Zsa!

Ms Capricorn is usually very proud of her body, and you cannot go wrong by exclaiming with wonder at just how statuesque she is without all those expensive clothes hiding all that sculptural perfection. Run your hands over her body (after she's warmed to you, of course), but keep away from their hairdo unless she is really on fire with passion.

Now here is the bad news: If you are a "whiz-bang-thank-you-ma'am!" type with a short, rapid peak time, you are going to be embarassed, and she is going to be very disappointed and extremely annoyed with you. It usually takes her a lot longer to get into the spirit of the thing, and even once she does she is in no hurry to climax. She has probably delayed even agreeing to such liberties with other equally desirable males, and she does not think of the act as any kind of celebration.

To her, sex is a reward for virtue, long over-due. Just as she would be upset being cheated in a business deal, she would never forgive you cheating her with any premature ejaculation on your part. Think of the female attitude in Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? "Goof it and you're a houseboy!" Take your time and you can make encore performances.

Don't take capricorn women at face value. They may seem reserved and rather patrician, but under this brittle armadillo-like facade are hot, volcanic sexual forces ready to erupt and engulf their lovers in unbelievable waves of ferocious sexuality. Because many men are somewhat cowed by their beauty and apparent unapproachability, these women often endure long periods of sexual starvation. They have been disappointed often by the poor timing of their lovers. They need a man with a strong back who will not take no for an answer. They respect a man who knows what he wants and insists on getting it.

She is the woman who despises a man for considering her just another number in his address bok, so don't call her only when easier game is indisposed or otherwise occupied. Great loyalty is expected and great loyalty is offered by her; she relates to sincerity and dedication. She is not as grim as she appears to be.

In a partner, she expects a worker and a good provider. As a companion, she will help you meet the right people, and as the mother of your children she will insist that the little ones be obedient, respectful, and steered into practical paths educationally and vocationally. She has a certain nonsense approach to child rearing which the rebellious child will resent, but the more serious and more ambitious child will revere her, even when she resorts to punishment.

The Capricorn Man

Capricorn men get started early in life on the adult path of work and responsibility - earlier than others in their peer group. They seem to have learned quickly in life that the world is grim, life in earnest; and they may exhibit a fear of being brought to judgement for every idle thought.

Responsible, disciplined and teaming with integrity, they are rarely anything but a gentleman. You may not find them in the white-collar edition, but even in jeans and a sweatshirt, they reek of principle. There are exceptions to this rule, but they are few and far between. Some Capricorns appear to be rather stiff and rigid, but it's mostly a front. More than anything they are just keenly aware of the social rules and regulations of life, and prefer to pay strict attention to them.

They are good providers and are even given to buying presents for those who have done or could do them favours.

If you can get them to relax, they will love you forever, but this is not something that comes naturally to them. They have the reputation for being the workaholics of the zodiac, but this does not always mean they work swiftly. They tend to move deliberately, but methodically through life - seeing it as a process that has to be learned. Born with an old soul, they seem to grow younger in spirit in their later years. They are not always clearly ambitious, but once you get to know them you will not be surprised to find they have some well defined goals. If you want a man who believes in commitment and is distinctly protective, this is the man that can provide it. Once he commits, you have a man who takes relationships seriously.

They can be cold, critical and sarcastic on the one hand, and warm, charming, helpful and loving on the other. They can be tender and they can be tough. They will never forget a favour and often feel obliged to return one to keep the balance sheet even.

The planet Saturn rules Capricorns, and Saturn is Father Time. Capricorn men take their time. Their keywords are dependability, survival and win. They bide their time. They wait. They have a away of winning in the end. They warm up and improve with the experiences of partnership, good and bad. When the weaker signs desert you in times of trouble, the Capricorns will hang in there and struggle and fight against the forces of adversity.

A conservative approach is best with this man. Abrasive or flighty types don't stand a chance with him, but his interest is often peaked if a person is sincere, gentle and dignified. He possesses an enormous amount of sensual and warm passion underneath his cool reserve, but it often takes time to emerge. He needs a lover who can help him learn how to relax and take the weight of the world off of his shoulders... sometimes. "Sometimes" is the key word, as he likes to be "in control", and neediness is not a quality he likes to project.

This is the man who needs a woman who can contribute to his desire for greater social status, one who can be patient, enduring, and understanding. He is a man who grows up in reverse, old as a child, with younger and younger feelings and actions as he mellows with age.

This is not a man who is comfortable letting anyone else set the pace. By nature he is commanding and the social "rituals" of courtship are important to him. If you are independent and rebellious by nature, so be it, but this is not going to be the person who is going to admire these qualities in you. He is not against strong individuals, in fact he admires them, but if you use your strength to try and manipulate him, be prepared for uncomfortable moments. Solid values and self respect are a big issues with him. He may not admit this when his earthy passions surface, but know it to be true and take your time with him. Later., watching him discover that he can be real with you and feel safe in your arms, is a beautiful sight to behold.

Compatibility With Other Signs

Capricorns are most compatible with Pisceans, Taureans and Scorpios.

The CAPRICORN - PISCES Relationship

Strange to say, they all recognized it at once, and until fear fell upon them they hailed it, not as something long dreamt of and seen at last, but as a familiar friend to whom they were returning home for the holidays.

In the calm presence of Capricorn, the Piscean Fish often feel cozy and snuggly secure, rather like baby bears when they're tucked into their winter logs for a nap. It may seem odd to think of the Fish as a bear, but Capricorn's ruling planet, Saturn, has that effect on Pisces. Because they're ruled by the slippery, subtle, and elusive planet Neptune, Pisceans find the solid stability of Saturn so comforting, it makes them feel like baby bears — (or Mama or Papa bears).

Conversely, in the serene presence of Pisces, the Capricorn Goats often feel a light-hearted, floating sensation…like bubbles, when they're released, shimmering, into the air. It may seem odd to think of the Goat as a bubble, but the Pisces ruling planet, Neptune, has that effect on Capricorn. Because they're ruled by the stern, demanding discipline of Saturn, the Goats find the dreamy, relaxed looseness of Neptune so fascinating and so full of the promise of freedom, it makes them feel like bubbles.

So, here they are, a Fish and a Goat, magically transformed by each other's proximity into a bear and a bubble. It's really quite beautiful, don't you think? All Pisces and Capricorn people should ponder the previous two paragraphs for a while, until they're permanently impressed by all the good things they can derive from their association, and realize the great value of the intangible, but precious, gifts they can exchange. The thought will bring them smoothly through the problem periods they'll experience, from time to time. But let's stay with their positive points of compatibility a bit longer, before deliberating on the dangers they must guard against.

There's often a marvelous serene sympatico inherent in this 3-11 Sun Sign Pattern, because it vibrates through the Earth and Water elements. Their association causes Capricorn's Earth essence to be greatly enriched, and the Piscean Water essence to find a secure place in which to flow. In these dual rewards, it's similar to the 3-11 Sun Sign Pattern influence of Earth and Water also experienced by Pisces-Taurus, Taurus-Cancer, Cancer-Virgo, Virgo-Scorpio, and Scorpio-Capricorn.

Goats feel somehow safer with a Fish than with most Sun Signs, other than Scorpio, in kicking up their heels defiantly against the natural Capricorn restrictive behavior. Although the Goats also get along smoothly with Taurus and Virgo, they may feel considerably less inclined to kick over the traces with the Bulls and Virgins than with Pisces. Contrariwise, the Fish, somehow, feel more protected with a Goat than with most Sun Signs, other than Taurus, from life's harsh, abrasive experiences — more courageous in Overcoming the natural Piscean introverted behavior. Although the Fish also get along smoothly with Scorpio and Cancer, they may feel somewhat less protected, as well as less courageous, with the Scorpions and Crabs than with the Goat. In many ways, therefore, Capricorn and Pisces were made for each other. If one of them has a Moon Sign or Ascendent in conflict with the other, they'll sputter and spat back and forth occasionally. Otherwise, these two will be far happier and more harmonious together than uptight and tense.

Because Pisces and Capricorn feel alike and think alike about most major issues, their differences of opinion are relatively less frequent than their times of agreeable, almost effortless, cooperation and compromise. Even in those areas where they differ and disagree, they'll take turns carefully convincing each other to come around to the other side of whatever question caused the friction. Sometimes it's the Goat who manages to straighten out the confused or muddled thinking of the Fish; at other times, it's the Fish who manages to soften the Goat's firm stand. For example, if they should become involved in a discussion of controversial subjects like astrology and religion, they probably won't be able to avoid clashing in principle, because Cappy is so big on tradition and authority-suspicious of the abstract — and less instinctively compassionate and perceptive than Pisces. In this case, it will usually be the Fish who gently turns around the Goat's wrong thinking — although on other subjects, an equal number of times, it's the Goat who determinedly switches the Fish's viewpoint to his (or her) own.

The CAPRICORN - TAURUS Relationship

It would be an easy map, if that were all; but there is also first day at school, religion, fathers verbs that take the dative, chocolate pudding day, getting into braces, say ninety-nine, threepence for pulling out your tooth yourself, and so on…

The shining virtues of solidity and dependability surround the Taurus Bull and Capricorn Goat with an aura of earth-colored sureness. Life to Taurus and Capricorn is not all grey and brown, nor black and blue. But you'll seldom find useless pastels, optimistic yellows or extroverted reds in their personal halos. When these two animals meet at the zoo, the ground shakes with the vibrations of destiny. Who knows what successes lie ahead when a Bull and a Goat get into harness together? They do.

Neither is in any doubt as to where he (or she) is going. To the top. In a large city or a small town, all the way to the top — to the place where it's peaceful, quiet, financially comfortable — where they'll be isolated from silly dreamers who muck up the air with foolish illusions, fantasies, and the doomed failure of misguided idealism.

The Bulls and Goats are both modest and reserved, and they both use moderation as an inner alarm, or security system, to warn them of any wayward emotions which might short circuit the smooth mechanism of their ambitions. Now, that's not to say that these people are dull, stodgy, humorless and unimaginative plodders. (Taurean Shakespeare, a plodder?) As for Capricorns, nearly all Goats have some sort of creative or artistic talent. Many of them draw as well when they're only doodling as professionals do when they're working, and some of them do actually become successful painters or writers. (Capricorn novelist Henry Miller is both.) As for the Bulls, they have music in their souls, regardless of all the common sense in their heads. Many Taureans are famous singers, musicians or composers. Others just piddle around on the piano, hum into a harmonica, or pluck a homemade zither. Nearly every one of them sings in the shower when they're sure no one can hear. In the humor department, Taurus is the original Falstaff, or court jester, full of throaty chuckles and funny one-liners. The average male or female Bull will slide into a comic monologue with little urging, in the living room or at the office.

The Capricorn Goats also possess a dry and droll sense of humor. Their keen observations on the comedy of life are amusingly clever, even though they normally make their remarks with a straight face, which only makes them funnier. When something really turns these people on, they can weave funny, whimsical tales of dry humor that would be the envy of a professional comedian. So you see, a combination of Taurus and Capricorn can be warm and amusing as well as steady, stable and steadfast.

Still, you shouldn't expect the Marx Brothers. Each was born under a negative Earth Sign, which does not provide fertile soil for frivolity. Goats and Bulls are funny, but they're not hilarious, and they won't lose an inch of dignity while they're cutting up. You won't find many of them dancing wildly in noisy disco dives. A nice quiet evening at home, watching movies is more their speed.

The areas of romance, children, religion, travel, education and show business are, percentage-wise, the probable pastures where the Goat and Bull will find a common interest. From there, they may engage in an endeavor which will unite them in a glorious strength of effort and purpose (if their mutual Luminaries are harmonious) or which could result in a hopeless locking of horns and total boredom (if the Sun and Moon Signs between their horoscopes are unfavorable). However, even in the latter case, they can always use the natural sympathy of all vibrations to bridge their difficulties. It's difficult for any two people who are influenced by this Sun Sign Pattern to remain angry or opposed for long. The path to reconciliation is always easy, and visible to them, when they desire to find it.

You might see an occasional Capricorn wearing a feather headdress and love beads, smoking peyote in the park and openly flouting convention, but if you do, you can be sure that he (or she) is a lost and lonely soul, trying desperately to prove something — heaven knows what. It's not a natural state of dress or behavior for the normally staid, formal Cappy, and there's certain to be a mild neurosis, or a dissatisfaction with Life, lingering in the smoke trailing out of the peace pipe.

You may also run across a rare Bull who drives a flashy yellow Stingray to the bank and shakes a pink tambourine while he makes his hefty cash deposit, but he's probably just trying to get the attention of a female teller to satisfy his sentimental Venus yearnings. It's really best in the long run to know who and what you are and be true to your own Sun Sign image. A Ram shouldn't try to be docile and meek. A Virgo would be miserable trying to be careless and casual. A Bull and a Goat should not try to be wild gypsies. It doesn't become them. It often becomes Aquarians, but not these two.

One area these Sun Signs are highly unlikely to be involved in together is the drug scene. Most Taureans don't really need the extra kick of a high, because their senses are so acutely tuned in on their environment. The Bulls can sniff a sweet pea or a zinnia, in pure ecstasy for hours, contemplating its form and color and scent — until they get stung by an angry bumblebee. As for the typical Capricorns, they wouldn't dream of indulging in recreation against the law, and certainly not one that might delay or obstruct their Saturn-directed, ambitious climb up the mountain — or cause a scandal.

The Goats want to be accepted and respected by their friends, relatives and neighbors, and by society at large. When scientists get around to taking their noses out of their test tubes and seriously investigate astrology, they'll find an amazingly small percentage of Taureans and Capricorns in "halfway houses," or in drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers, as compared with the number of other Sun Signs. There are, of course, occasional exceptions that prove the rule, but very few.

Many Capricorns and Taureans share with Leo a love of precious gems and metal. The flamboyant-type Leos like to wear them, the flashier the better. The Bulls like to dig them out of the ground, creatively stirred by the excitement of discovery, as they burrow deep into the bowels of the earth for turquoise, gold, silver or diamonds. Capricorn likes to mold them into practical art objects, and the Goat often satisfies those secret artistic yearnings while burnishing the brass and leaning over the Bunsen burner. However, the final objective of both the Taurus Bull and the Capricorn Goat is to find the vain Lions or Lionesses to buy their wares, so they can make Money, which is spelled S-E-C-U-R-I-T-Y.

What more appropriate place for a billy goat to roam and nose around in? The great talent of the Saturn-ruled lies in finding hidden treasures, buried among the discarded trash, twisted tin and broken glass of Life. Both literally and symbolically.

Capricorns become adults somewhere around the age of two or three. Taureans decide on the scope of their future financial empires at around the same age. So it doesn't matter how old or how young these two are when they team up. Their goals will be identical. Both the Bull and the Goat are wise to the ways of the outer world. It's their own inner worlds that give them trouble. Each is brimming over with a sentiment he or she won't show — and each is deeply — in need of affection and appreciation for which he (or she) won't ask. So there they stand like two mountains, side by side, starving for human comfort and closeness, each stubbornly resisting the other's timid overtures of friendship or demonstrations of open affection.

The CAPRICORN - SCORPIO Relationship

They left nothing undone that was consistent with the reputation of their tribe.

Neither Scorpio nor Capricorn finds it easy to communicate, but they'll usually be more conversationally at ease when they're together than when they are with most other people they know. Only with the sextiled vibration of Virgo, and with the trined Sun Signs of Cancer and Pisces, does Scorpio feel as free to be himself — or herself. The same thing is true of Capricorn — with Pisces, Virgo and Taurus.

Scorpio and Capricorn will spend most of their time together discussing their individual and mutual hopes, dreams and wishes, and although they'll be in general agreement regarding the nature of their goals in life, they may not be in complete agreement as to the ideal methods of achieving them. They both secretly desire to be respected, they both aspire to a quiet kind of power behind the scenes over their sphere in life, whether it be a home, a classroom, a business or a government (former President Richard Nixon is a Capricorn); yet the Goat may deplore Scorpio's inner intensity, believing it to be a waste of vital energy, while Scorpio may think the Goat lacks sentiment and sensitivity. Still, they're both practical-minded enough to consider their divergent methods of achievement of far less importance than success or failure in the final analysis, and once they decide to trust each other, they can intermingle their abilities to increase their chances of the former.

Fortunately, the Goat will receive the retaliatory sting of the Scorpion somewhat less frequently than others, and will find those few stings easier to shrug off (Cappy tends to shrug off anything that impedes progress or takes up precious time in excessive emotional reaction), while Scorpio is likely to understand and be patient with Capricorn's Saturnine broodings, for Scorpio is also susceptible to spells of inexplicable depression. This sort of astrological sympathy is evident with children of these Sun Signs, as well as with adults. Not always, but almost always, brothers and sisters undergo phases of competitive struggles, ranging from mild disagreement to what temporarily appears to be active dislike. Although Scorpio and Capricorn experience their share of sibling rivalry, these two will normally find a way to work out their difficulties sooner than most, and will usually end up defending each other against outsiders. The same pattern emerges between the Capricorn Goat and the Scorpion Eagle in business, friendship or love relationships. The association may not always be completely harmonious — but there's always a basis for compromise, because of a subconscious comprehension of each other's inner natures.

Although the Scorpion and the Goat are both very private people, the typical Scorpio is apt to do considerably more talking in public than Cappy. But the Scorpion uses words as a smoke screen, verbosity being utilized as a kind of substitute for (or armour against) saying what he or she is actually thinking. Scorpios are fond of all manner of disguises, and talking about everything except what's really important to them is merely one of the many masks Pluto wears to fool the uninitiated. Capricorn recognizes and admires this ability, even envies it, for the Goat is essentially shy. Beneath the surface social nonchalance, Scorpio is also shy, or rather, markedly reserved regarding private feelings and emotions. And so, the Goat's sometimes painful timidity touches Scorpio deeply, and is not frequently the initial basis for sympathy between them.

There are always the exceptions to be considered, of course, always those Scorps and Cappies who are influenced by the Fire or Air elements through the Moon Signs or Ascendents of their horoscopes, but the average or typical Scorpio and Capricorn will place a great deal more emphasis and concentration on getting ahead in life and insuring personal security than on social frivolities and nonproductive activities — often a shade too much emphasis and concentration. For man and woman live not by bread alone, and these two would profit immeasurably by adding not only hyacinths for the soul but a little more poetry and magic to their lives. Thanks to Saturn's gift of the reverse aging process to Capricorn, as Scorpio and Capricorn grow older, the Goat is likely to coax the Eagle into more exciting experimentation. One of the dangers of a close and long-continued association between these two Sun Signs is that they could get stuck in the repetitious rut of a monotonous life-style, until Cappy feels that kicking-up-the-heels urge, and wheedles the Eagle into dancing to a more daring tune — the same kind of persuasion used by Scorpio toward Capricorn in the beginning of the relationship.

A somewhat amusing and one might say positive aspect to this combination (depending upon how one views it) is that Scorpio's compulsive secrecy will not normally be a cause of friction between them, for Capricorn is seldom fascinated by anyone's secrets. The Goat is invariably bored by any variation of a guessing game. Unless there's a Cancer or Scorpio Moon Sign or Ascendent, Capricorns will ignore Valentines signed "Guess Who?" They are not amused by anonymous letters or round robins, and should the Eagle address a remark to Capricorn beginning with the words "Guess what!," the reaction will probably be a polite yawn. The Goat will simply wait until Scorpio gets around to stating "what." Cappy is not about to be drawn into such a childish challenge. The typical Saturnine philosophy concerning intrigue is that Time will eventually provide all answers, and those answers not so revealed by Father Time, in all his wisdom, are not worth pursuing (unless it's a Mother Goat who's poking about for information regarding her offspring, in which case she may turn into a rather persistent temporary detective).

Ordinarily, however, Capricorns are not cursed with the torture of a burning curiosity. Let Scorpio follow the starry trail of creatures from outer space, and secretly long for a "close encounter" with alien beings. Cappy considers it risky to fool around with people who might possess the kind of weapons used in Star Wars. Personally and privately, the typical Capricorn feels the whole UFO hoopla is a little silly, because it's based more on fancy than on fact. If such creatures do exist, Capricorn will gladly walk out in the backyard to watch them land in the strawberry patch, but vicarious experience doesn't thrill the Goat. Capricorns have small use for peek-a-boo or hide-and-go-seek, whether as children or adults. If a person has something to say, Earthling or Alien, let it be said now — flat out - instead of all this telekinetic and telepathic beating about the bush.

Most of the time, Capricorn's boredom with curiosity in all its forms will please the Pluto-ruled Scorpions, since nothing makes them angrier than to catch someone snooping in their diaries, checkbooks, sock drawers or private thoughts — until and unless they choose to share their secrets. But now and then, the ultra-sensitive Scorpio man or woman will take offense at Capricorn's refusal to be curious, and interpret it as a lack of interest — which is exactly what it is.

The Goat's lack of interest, however, is not synonymous with a lack of caring. Yet, with Scorpio, a lack of interest does indicates a lack of caring, for Scorpios are curious only when they care about something, and when they don't care, that thing or person becomes invisible to them. The problem with Scorpio curiosity is that the Eagles tend to stretch it into suspicion. They tell themselves that a little suspicion — is a healthy thing, a protection against those who take advantage of the gullible. But suspicion has its negative side too, and can cause Scorpio to suffer many groundless fears. Capricorns, on the other hand, have no need to trouble themselves with undue suspicion, because the Saturnine caution accomplishes the same self-protective purpose with much less wear and tear on the nervous system.

For all their uneasy suspicions, Scorpios are metaphysically and religiously driven; therefore they believe intensely in the power of faith over all manner of failure (even when they don't openly admit such faith), and this is a major difference between the Pluto-ruled Scorps and the Saturn-restricted Cappies. "If you really want it," preaches the Eagle to the Goat, "believe you'll attain it, and you surely will." But Capricorn remains unseduced, unmoved, and replies with one of Saturn's own religious beatitudes: "Blessed are they who expect nothing," preaches Cappy, "for they shall not be disappointed."

Sometimes the philosophical debates between these two do somewhat resemble a church service on a gloomy Sunday, with inspired Scorpio giving the sermon and practical Capricorn passing the collection plate.

"We walk about, amid the destinies of our world-existence, encompassed by dim but ever present Memories of a Destiny more vast...very distant in the bygone time, and infinitely awful..."

- Edgar A. Poe (January 19, 1809)
