¤ So much of the time after the divorce I felt lonely. A deep, deep sorrow. It was as though all the tenderness had left my life. My dad never held me or played with me. Everything was strained and solitary. I often had the feeling sorrow would smother me entirely. It undermined every triumph and lurked beneath every success. I began writing so I wouldn't drown in vague, unvoiced pain. I wrote more than I spoke. Finally, I lost confidence and became withdrawn. ¤
